Owing to Internet and satellite communication network, the modem mass media enrich their information services, which are more open and share among people. In our modern society requiring mass-production, mass-consumption and mass-delivery, the fashion illustration is being firmly established as means of delivering the images and messages to people. Thus, fashion illustration is obliged to provide for fresh and innovative senses appealing to people. Moreover, in order to be more firmly established as an independent genre of art, fashion illustrators should make more unswerving efforts. In other words, fashion illustrators are requested to experiment various materials and objects and develop a variety of techniques, while creating ideas incessantly to establish their discipline firmly. With such basic conceptions in mind, this study was aimed at classifying the engraver M. C. Escher's works according to his artist life cycles and themes, and thereby, reviewing his unique expression techniques and his revolutionary view of the space and thereupon, exploring the ways to apply his works to fashion illustrations. To be more specific, the researcher attempted to apply Escher's spatial structures to fashion illustrations and therewith, produce some creative fashion illustration works differentiated from the conventional works. M. C. Escher has not much been spotlighted in the history of art, while his ideas focused on mathematics made him an outsider in the world of art. Thus, we may easily gain access to his works through the books about mathematics, psychology or science. However, his works did not simply express some simple geometric principles or physical view of space, but explore and stuy the objects from a fresh viewpoint only to sublime his own world into a beautiful decoration art. The goals of this study may be two-fold; first, Escher's world of works would be studied from a viewpoint of art to recognize his unique spatial structure. Second, his works would be applied to the discipline of fashion illustration to depart from the uniform two-dimensional plan and instead, set a variety of spaces to produce creative fashion illustration works. To this end, fashion illustration was defined and its development was reviewed through literature, and thereupon, Escher' s life and works were examined through his letters, diaries, sketches, biography and collection of works. Escher's world of works may be divided in large into the earlier landscape painting works and those works with the geometric principles applied. In this study, the latter works were analyzed. The works with the geometric principles applied were classified into five stages according to development of ideas and Eschers' unique interpretations of space: regular division of the plane, infinite space, polyhedron, spatial relationship and mirrored world. Then, the cases of his works applied to modern fashion design were examined. As a result, it was found that some of Escher's works rely on optical illusion, others use regular planar patterns and others adopt some theoretical approaches. Moreover, some of his works were applied to pattern designs. However, since he was not much reputed in art, few studies analyzed his works systematically or from the viewpoint of the art history. In particular, few fashion designs applied his creative concept of space or his materials, and few studies were conducted on application of his works to fashion illustration. Hence, it may well be very important to comparatively analyze the application of his works to fashion design and thereby, find some insights into fresh ideas for fashion design. The cases suggested in the third chapter are the works produced borrowing Eschers' motives, and they suggest the possibility of applying his 'creative ideas' to fashion. Fashion design is a popular art breathing together with the people, so fashion designers are obliged to capture the fashion and current of the society earlier and lead the people. On the other hand, in the discipline of the fashion illustration expressing the fashion as picturesque, use of the computer is inevitable. So, it is necessary to depart from the conventional expression and instead, pay attention to creative ideas and current of the fashion in order to attract people's eyesights. Lastly, the researcher produced the fashion illustrations applying the themes of Escher's geometric works - and therefore, departing from the conventional works - and applying the planar division and spatial concepts. A total of 8 works were produced both manually and using the computer application program. In order to draw people's attention following the current of fashion and at the same time, express strong images, colors were clearly contrasted by means of computer output. The intention of these fashion illustration works was, as suggested in the fourth chapter, to demonstrate that Escher's creative ideas can be good sources attracting people. The reason why the works were produced manually and using the computer was to render the colors more vividly and experiment diverse expression techniques. The ultimate goal of this study is to explore the possibility of applying Escher's unique patterns and spatial views to fashion design or fashion illustration and thereby, explore some new ways or directions to create fresh ideas.
