The purpose of this study is to identify the needs of learners of Korean who work as professionals for companies in Korea in light of Korean for Specific Purposes. The focus of analysis for this study was tasks, a meaningful acquisition unit from a language learner's perspective. The needs analysis focused on the target tasks job-experienced business learners would need to perform preferably in Korean in the course of their job. In the introduction, the importance of needs identification is reviewed and shown to be one of the primary six phases of a systematic approach to language curriculum development. The two major different approaches to syllabus design - Synthetic and Analytic approaches - are also presented in support of task-based needs analysis in Task-based Language Teaching. Finally an overview of the current trends in Korean as a Foreign Language syllabus design is presented from a critical perspective. The analysis consisted of three steps: gathering basic information, a survey, and a follow-up interview. The sources of information included business persons studying Korean, Korean teachers, Korean co-workers, Korean Language institute staff, related articles, etc. The questionnaire was based on the results of interviews conducted during initial research. The survey questions covered learners' general demographic information, learning needs, and target tasks. It was found that learners needs differed greatly according to individual variables; language group, age, position, length of time in Korea, length of time of learning Korean, frequency of using Korean. The results of the survey showed that professional Korean learners had very specific needs. The target tasks considered to be of greatest importance fell into two categories; job related and inter-personal. Job-related tasks included participating in meetings, reading reports and documents, reporting, checking e-mails, searching the Internet for information, and using the telephone. Inter-personal related tasks included conversing with co-workers, exchanging business cards, introducing one's job or company. On the basis of the findings of this study it is recommended that: (1) Syllabus designers and teachers attempt to use comprehensive targeted tasks when designing pedagogic materials and by way of discourse analysis attempt to use the most authentic materials possible. (2) Syllabus designers and teachers develop curriculum that acknowledges the communicative and cultural needs of professionals working in Korea. (3) Syllabus designers and teachers consider students' learning needs, including time constraints and obstacles to using Korean in the course of their job. The bilingual surroundings of Korean companies are unique to Korean for Business Purposes and should not be equated with the requirements of English for Business Purposes.
