The swine wastewater treatment system having a nanofiltration and a reverse osmosis process was suggested in this study. RDMs (Rotary Disk Membrane modules) were used for nanofiltration experiment and DT (Disk Tube) module was used for reverse osmosis experiment. The main objectives of this study were to investigate the basic characteristics of the conventional RDM (C-RDM) and the backpulsing RDM (B-RDM), which was designed to generate pulse to the membrane permeate side as the module rotates with a stainless ball and to apply NF and RO to the separation and volume reduction of a swine wastewater. The C-RDM and B-RDM were equipped with XN 45 (TRISEP, USA) nanofiltration membrane. The flow resistance of a permeate side (R_(pe)) was negligible compared to the resistance of a membrane (R_(m) = 7.8108 ㎪/LMH). A great part of the overall pressure drop was the pressure loss generated by the slip on the membrane surface. For the wastewater the flux was increased with the linear velocity and the effective pressure, but decreased with TS (Total Solids) concentration. However, at the operating pressure of over 392 ㎪ the increase of flux declined. There was a little difference to the separation characteristics between C-RDM and B-RDM because the effect of the back-pulse in B-RDM was diminished by damping of membrane sheets. The flux was significantly enhanced by the periodic operating pressure drop. As the volume of wastewater was reduced by 10 times the water content decreased from 97.2 % to 87.4 %, the viscosity increased from 13 ㎫·s to 766 ㎫·s and the soluble TOC increased from 12,890 mg/L to 32,020 mg/L. During the volume reduction, the flux could be distinguished by 3 regions ; ⅰ) influenced by TS concentration, ⅱ) not influenced by TS concentration, ⅲ) influenced by the viscosity of concentrate. The multivalent ions rejected by nanofiltration were crystallized and remained as solids in the vessel. Reverse osmosis experiment was carried out to give 10 times volume reduction. The flux was reduced from 35.2 LMH to 15.9 LMH. The rejection of conductivity, TOC, COD_(cr) was 96.3 % ~ 90.7 %, 64.2 % ~ 73.7 %, 92 % ~ 96 %, respectively. The basic investigation to the fouling mechanism of the asymmetric reverse osmosis membrane was carried out by using TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy). ESR (Electron Spin Resonance) method was employed to measure the activity of the TEMPO. The mobility of the TEMPO deposited in the membrane was smaller than in the solution one. It showed the potential to identify the fouling of reverse osmosis could take place in the membrane pores or membrane surface.
