Retaining walls are used to prevent excessive movement of retained soils. Typical retaining walls include gravity, reinforced concrete, reinforced earth and tie-backs. However, from a practical viewpoint there are still drawbacks among these often constructed retaining walls. While rigid gravity and reinforced concrete walls are less susceptible to differential settlements, their drainage pipes are often blocked with age, which allows high water pressure and excessive saturation of the backfill soil to develop. The inherent flexibility of reinforced earth walls allow them to function despite differential settlements. However, they require more space than other walls to accommodate the reinforcing materials, and corrosion of these may become a problem. Tie-back walls are also flexible, but the tensile metal and anchor parts are susceptible to corrosion. New type of segmental gravitational retaining walls currently provide an efficient and cost effective option for the support of earth banks. These walls are quickly and easily erected and no large machinery is required as the individual members are relatively easy to handle and constructed with precast concrete blocks interconnected with adjacent block. The design of segmental gravity retaining walls has traditionally been based on classical soil mechanic theories. These theories, originally derived by Rankine and Coulomb, assume that the wall acts as a rigid body. In this type of retaining walls frictional effects play an important role to stabilize the wall against the failure. Therefore in this study, the earth pressure and relative displacement appearance of retaining wall due to variation of inclination is measured to examine this behavior characteristics. Also, the earth pressure characteristics of retaining walk y surcharge load, and the deflections are estimated. Through the model tests, found out which factor influences most to the earth pressure characteristics of segmental retaining wall. For model tests, a 1/5 scale reduce models are manufactured include connect each blocks with adjacent block. To simulate block system are interconnected each other and the construction type of blocks and wall front inclination are varied to investigate the relative displacement of individual block and the location of maximum deformation of wall as increasing surcharging. As the result of this study, generally occurs in inclined block type retaining wall system while local fall failure is observed in the vertical system and this trend appears in model tests. Although the lateral earth pressure are not reduced in the block system, that will effectively improve the overturning stability due to frictional effects of precast concrete blocks interconnected with adjacent block.
