Adsorption processes are used economically for various separations processes in the chemical industries. Activated carbon has long been used for removal of VOCs (volatile orgamic compounds) from exhaust gas streams in industrial adsorption process. However, their affluence cause the loss of fuel, the environmental pollution, and the demage to hyman body. Though there are many recovery and controlling skills for VOCs, the adsorption technique has been known as a promising method for recovery of volatile organic compounds. In this study, the effects of residual water in effluent air stream during industrial operations, and water content after activated carbon regeneration using steam desorption on an isothermal adsorption process were investigated. For the commercial purpose, the design of fixed-bed adsorbers is based on the breakthrough curves and the appearance of the breakpoint. Most of all, the rigorous multicomponent adsorption equilibrium is one of the keys in the design of adsorbers. Up to now, owing to significant mathematical or computational complications in studying the ideal/nonideal dynamic behavior in fixed-bed equipments for gas mixtures, little attention has been given to these problem. This study focused on the effects of residual water on the dynamic process of single and binary organic vapor adsorption on activated carbon pellet(Norit B4) for volatile solvent vapors of CTC(carbon tetrachloride) and EDC(ethylene dichloride). To improve the industrial design of these adsorbers and to find the best operating conditions, the adsorption processes need to be modeled. Such as gas-solid equilibrium experiments and adsorption kinetic experiments must be performed. The experiments were conducted at 298.15K to obtain single and binary adsorption isotherms. Isothermal adsorption column was setup to study the effects of feed concentration, flow rate, breakthrough curve and adsorption capacity on the adsorption characteristics of EDC and CTC. Desorption characteristics of residual water on controlled in a range from 0∼20wt%. The single-component equilibrium data was well fitted to Langmuir equation. Furthermore multi-component equilibrium data were represented by several well-known such as EL(extended Langmuir), ELF(extended Langmuir-Freundlich). Based on this result, the LDF(linear driving force) model was used to simulate isothermal adsorption behaviors in a fixed bed adsorber. The LDF model have given good results for modeling dynamic adsorption. Multicomponent breakthrough curves showed a peculiar behavior that the oder of breakthrough would be changed according to molar rations of the mixture. But, when the molar ratio of EDC exceeds certain value, the order of breakthrough is not change. Residual water influenced a VOCs absorption in activated carbon. Therefore, consideration of residual water is indispensable. The proposed model can be used in simulating the adsorption behavior of practical adsorpton processes.
