This paper presents an implantable telemetry LC resonance-type pressure sensor to measure the ventricle pressure. The sensor consists of an inductor and a capacitor. The LC resonant circuit consists of the sensor and an external antenna coil which are coupled magnetically. The resonance frequency of the circuit decreases as the applied pressure increases the capacitance of the sensor. The sensor is designed in consideration of the biocompatibility and the long lifetime for continuous monitoring of the ventricle pressure. In the case of LC resonance type, the sensor is simple and small. Another advantages of this type are the high resolution and the simplicity in the design for the wide range of the pressure and the temperature. We focus on the different structure of the capacitance. The sensor is simple to fabricate and small in comparison with others reported previously. Also, the deflection of the diaphragm, the variation of the capacitance and the resonance frequency are analyzed and calculated. The pressure in the ventricle ranges from 0 to 7 kPa. The sensor consists of a glass substrate and a Si substrate. The Cu coil The capacitance for self-inductance is electroplated on a glass substrate. The capacitance between the coil and Au plate on the flexible p^(+) diaphragm depends on diaphragm deflection due to the applied pressure. The self-inductance and the capacitance determine the resonance frequency of the sensor. The two substrates are bonded by anodic bonding technology. Total size is 7 ㎜ X 6.5 ㎜. The gap between the coil and the diaphragm is 20 μm. The thickness of the diaphragm is about 4 μm and the size is 3 ㎜ X 3 ㎜. The diaphragm has corrugations to release the residual stress and to increase the sensitivity. The inductance of the sensor coil measured by LCR meter is 3.2 μH. For the proposed structure the flat and corrugated diaphragm deflections to the applied pressure are calculated with a shape function. The capacitance to the applied pressure is calculated with the deflection data. The capacitances of the flat diaphragm and the corrugated diaphragm are 1.60 pF and 1.87 pF, respectively, for 2 KPa, and 1.70 pF and 2.10 pF, respectively, for 4 KPa. When the pressure is applied to the diaphragm of the sensor, the resonance frequency decreases. Since the phase of the coupled circuit changes abruptly at resonance frequency, the pressure can be calculated from the phase shift at the resonance frequency. The measurement setup is to obtain the frequency characteristics of the inductance of the antenna coupled with the sensor. The resonance frequency of the external coil changes when the external coil is coupled with the sensor. The impedance vs. frequency was measured with the impedance analyzer HP4914A. The frequency shift of the resonance frequency is 1.2 MHz. The calculation and the experimental results show that the pressure detection is feasible.
