This study was carried out to determine the proper management for old trees in the city of Suncheon through providing data, such as the function and value of the old trees, the policy of protection management, the status of management, and the status of growth. The results obtained were as follows; 1. There are 3 natural monuments of 2 species, 16 local monuments of 6 species, 69 protected trees of 10 species, and 89 undesignated old trees in the city of Suncheon. 177 old trees were investigated and the 89 undesignated old trees were not declared as protected. 2. Those trees were investigated as follows: In Juam-myeon, 34 old trees, including designated trees, in Nakan-myeon (28 trees), in Byeollyang-myeon (19 trees), in Hwangjeon-myeon (14 trees), in Seo-myeon and Dosa-dong (11 trees each), in Sangsa-myeon, Weoldung-myeon, and Samsan-dong (10 trees each). This investigation indicated that most old trees in downtown city of Suncheon were designated as protected trees, while other trees were not protected when growing outside of a downtown area. Old trees outside of a downtown area need management that is convergent and promptly. 3. The number of species of old trees total 13, with 103 Zelkova serrata trees, which were the most old trees, 22 Celtis sinensis trees, 12 Salix chaenomeloides trees, 11 Aphananthe aspera trees, 9 Ginkgo biloba trees, 4 each of Pinus densiflora and Celtis choseniana trees, 3 each of Carpinus laxiflora and Chionanthus retusa, 2 each of Carpinus tschonoskii and Juniperus communis var. montana trees, and single trees of Sophora japonica, and Melia azedarach var. japonica. The Circumference at Breast Height(C.B.H.) revealed that the most trees (56 trees) were 3.0m∼3.5m, 27 trees were 4.5m, and 12 trees were more than 6.0m C.B.H. 4. The symbolic functions of old trees shows there are 66 spiritual trees (shamanism tree made up, 37%), 62 shade trees, and 33 trees grown for scenic beauty. Because of changing lifestyles, the spiritual trees are getting decreasing and shade trees and trees grown for scenic beauty are increasing. 5. The classification of types of location showed that 87 village-type trees, which were unique, 33 field-type trees, 25 monument-type trees, 24 field and mountain-type trees, and 8 street-type trees were growing. The classification of types of planting showed that 74 individual trees, 76 line-type trees, 24 assembled planting trees, and 3 forest-type trees. 6. 70 trees have been kept in very good condition according to growth-base environment, while 32 trees have been kept in good condition, which means the growth-base environment was not bad. This investigation also indicated that 62 trees have been kept poorly with a normal condition of growth-base environment, and 13 trees have been kept in bad condition. 7. The covered form of the old tree's surrounding environment showed that 66 trees are covered by natural soil, 44 trees are covered by grassland which contains 62% of the trees. 58 trees are covered by concrete and 2 trees are covered by asphalt which causes the tree's surrounding environmental conditions to get worse with increasing concrete and other artificial constructions. 8. The status of the old trees' damages showed that trunk cavity are becoming decomposed, where tree trunks, dead branches, weakening branches, and roots are coming out of the soil. 81 old trees need immediate surgery with the trunk cavity, 58 old trees face a high risk within the trunk cavity, and 77 old trees have dead branches. 9. The problems of management and protection of the old trees are misunderstood tree species and tree ages, signboard of old trees, lack of surgery, covered of concrete on the root, the indifference of the local people, and lack of funding and lack of facilities. On the basis of the above analysis, we have reached the conclusion that four openings exist for activity in old tree management. First, plant specialists with correct judgment are needed to identify tree species and ages. The ages of the tree also need to be marked while working with signboard. Second, most of the old trees need surgery on their trunk cavity, dead-branches, and decomposing trunk areas. However, funds have not increased enough to allow for surgery on at least 3∼4 old trees. The old trees are important enough to be supported as national expenses and need to be protected as historical, cultural, and environmental resources in Korea. Third, covered concrete needs to be eliminated; surgery and treatment of damaged area, management of damage by blight and noxious insects, and management of fertilizer to provide best conditions for growth must be initiated or improved for the old trees. Forth, public space and facilities should be provided. For example, use the surroundings near the old trees as a small park or establish regular base events in terms of cultural perspectives, including publications, interpretation, cultural and ecological tours for arousing local people's interest in care for the old trees. Old trees are symbol of a village, and history itself, and are used as rest areas for local people and as faith objects in Korea. These historical and cultural relics can be recovered or will have to be made artificially when they are gone because of development or the negligence of management. The government, citizens, and appropriate agencies have to establish management plan with recommended systems from specialists and also have to adopt a policy of promotion and support of the old trees under the Law. Moreover, it is important that the government cultivate men of talent in this field by using sponsorship from expertise groups. In this survey, among the old trees, these with less than 3 meters of the circumference at breast height were not counted, but those trees will be growing taller and old in the near future. The local government(s) and citizens have to establish a management plan for those trees' future and cultivate those trees as natural monument.
