The characteristics of heavy metals biosorption, environmental factors, adsorption isotherms of heavy metals on seaweed as biosorbent, the possibility of biosorbent reuse, and the recovery of the heavy metals were investigated to develop a biological treatment technology for wastewater polluted with heavy metals. The heavy metal adsorption on seaweeds was in the order: Undaria sp.≥Ecklonia sp.≥Laminaria sp.>Gelidium sp. The adsorption rate was relatively different for each type of heavy metal considered. The solution concentration for each type of heavy metal was set at 100 mg/ℓ and a 3-gram of seaweed was contacted for each solution. The percentage of Pb adsorption was in the range of 93-99% while 70-80% was obtained for both Cu and Cd adsorption. Pretreatment of seaweeds with HCl, H_(2)SO_(4), CaCl_(2) solutions was conducted to increase the heavy metals adsorption on seaweeds. The degree of heavy metal adsorption increased with the type of seaweed used. The increase was apparent in the seaweed which was pretreated with CaCl_(2) solution. The amount of heavy metals adsorption slightly increased with increase in solution pH but did not increase with increase in temperature. The adsorption rate of Pb, Cd, Co, Zn, Cr, Co, Ni, and Mo on the waste Undaria sp. used as the biosorbent in a single heavy metal solution was about 100%, 86%, 85%, 64%, 61%, 57%, 57%, and 48% respectively. Except for Pb, the adsorption rate of all heavy metals in a single heavy metal adsorption decreased as compared to mixed heavy metals. However, the capacity of heavy metal adsorption per 1g of biosorbent in mixed heavy metals increased. The adsorption rate of heavy metals on the biosorbent was not affected by the temperature and the pH of the solution. Therefore, the optimum operating temperature and pH for synthetic wastewater treatment are 20-30℃ and pH 5-6, respectively. The adsorption equilibrium of heavy metals was reached in about 1 hour. The equilibrium parameters were determined based on Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The affinity of metals on the biosorbent decreased in the following order: Pb>Cu>Cr>Cd>Co. It is apparent that the Freundlich isotherm could reasonably fit the data of heavy metal adsorption compared to the Langmuir isotherm. In order to investigate the structural characteristic of the biosorbent after heavy metal biosorption, a FT-IR analysis was conducted. This procedure may be able to confirm the replacement of the functional group by the heavy metals ions. At 3400 cm^(1), the OH- group was detected; at 1648 cm^(1), C=O bond; at 1426 cm^(1), C-O bond; and 850 cm^(1), S=O was detected. Generally, the inverted peaks became larger after heavy metals adsorption. For biosorbent reuse, the most optimum desorbent was investigated by conducting desorption rate of heavy metals using four different kinds of desorbents. The desorption rate decreased in the following sequence: NTA>H_(2)O_(4)>HCl>EDTA. Therefore, NTA is the most optimum desorbent. The desorption rate of heavy metals by NTA increased with increase in the concentration from 0.1 to 0.3% but the desorption rate became constant beyond 0.3%. Except for chromium, the desorption rate of heavy metal was not affected by temperature and pH. The optimum temperature and pH was 30℃ and pH 2, respectively. The desorption rate was over 80% within 10-minute contact time and became constant after 1 hour. The recovery of heavy metals adsorbed on the biosorbent and the possibility to reuse the biosorbent were investigated by conducting an adsorption-desorption cycle for 10 times. High removal efficiency was obtained in the first cycle, then decreased in the second cycle, and relatively became constant until the 10th cycle. After adsorption, the biosorbent containing heavy metals was combusted at 550℃ and 120-450 mg of combusted residues was obtained. The removal efficiency of heavy metals in wastewater by biosorbent and activated carbon was investigated in a column packed with the biosorbent and activated carbon. 20ℓ/day of the wastewater polluted with 100 mg/ℓ of each heavy metal was passed through the packed-bed column. Both the biosorbent and activated carbon showed high removal efficiency of more than 99% for each heavy metal in the early stage but the removal efficiency began to slowly decrease after passing 65ℓ, 30ℓ, 50ℓ, 15ℓ, 8ℓ, 12ℓ, 15ℓ and 10ℓ of the wastewater polluted with Pb, Cu, Cd, Zn, Mn, Co, Cr, and Ni, respectively through the column. Comparing the results of the removal efficiency obtained from both adsorbents, the treatment ability of biosorbent appeared better than that of the activated carbon. It is suggested that biosorbent can be used as a substitute for the commercially-available activated carbon.
