The workplace of today is changing. There has been a shift from an era in which profits may be made by selling large quantities of high-quality products at low cost to a new era in which it is that is for sale, and there is no going back. The office has gone from being a , where regulated, routine labor is carried out, to a , where intellectual invention occurs without clear methods or processes. In other words, from an era in which the acceptable solution was no more than an easily-resolved, homogeneous layout of desks and chairs, we have moved to an era which demands the installation of spaces that will increase creativity. Office is understood as a system consisted of three subsystems; office work, technology and organization. In the age of information, office is a complicated device in an organization to create, process, modify and deliver various information for organizational goals. It is true, however, that office interior has not been much changed since 1960's though organizational structure and employees' work patterns have been changed rapidly. It is demanded that office environment should be carefully planned and designed to support work processes and work patterns of a firm. Therefore, it is urgent to develop new concepts of office design based on current changes of workers' needs and organizational structure. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the requirement of changes in office design process. Through a literature survey, the study reviews brief history of office interior to find changing factors and directions of office interior. Work patterns in office are analyzed based on information, activity and communication patterns while office environment is analyzed based on physical, psychological and technological factors. Finally, interview and questionnaire items are derived from critical comparison between work characteristics and office environment. The study conducts interviews with facility managers of 8 firms as well as questionnaire survey with 212 office workers. In addition, office layouts are analyzed to figure out current working condition of office environment and workers' satisfaction. The major findings of this research are as follows: 1) The work characteristics were divided in to activity, communication and information characteristics. The type of the information mostly dealt were computers and then the papers. And the rate of time being seated, informations being mostly dealt, and the proportion of the creative works were differed by work patterns. 2) Work patterns are divided into eight different types based on information, activity and communication characteristics of a work relationship between workers' specific needs and current condition of office environment are analyzed by five work patterns among the eight, ①clerical : general, ②professional general, ③professional : design, ④clerical : customer service and ⑤sales and marketing. Based on the analysis of interviews and questionnaire survey, Prototypes and layouts of workstations as well as design guidelines for office planning are demonstrated by five work patterns concerning employee satisfaction. In addition, workplace strategies by work patterns are suggested to increase office productivity, employee satisfaction and to reduce space costs for example, marketing or sales can have a shared or assigned workstation which is minimum requirement of the size with high telecommunication facilities. General professionals can have a private office where they concentrate around central meeting area. Design professionals can have benzene-shaped workstations which are large enough to accomodate Computer. 3) The paradigms of work have changed radically in recent years, but the design of work environments has not undergone a similar radical change. For Officecity to be real, it needed to be unbounded flows and trends wherever they go.
