The purpose of this study is to analyze the experiment on mixing color lights in the middle school textbooks and to suggest improved experiments. And thus, we ultimately intend to encourage science teachers to use improved materials in their classes and to improve learning effects. To achieve this purpose, we analyzed the chapter introducing lights mixing in 8 science textbooks for the middle school. For these analyses, we developed questionaries for science teachers asking difficulties of experiments. From textbook analyses, we found the common method in every 8 kinds of textbook uses cellophane papers as a filter to generate three basic lights, which are Red, Green, and Blue. In the teacher's answer to questions, they also answered the cellophane papers are the method to obtain monochromatic light source. The reason is why a cellophane paper is mainly suggested in schoolbooks and is easy to get these around us. However, if they try to show light mixing to students with lights obtained by cellophane papers without the help of the precautions, they are always not satisfied with results. So, in teaching mixing with colored lights, most teachers (48.6%) just showed the pictures or photos to their students rather than demonstrations by experiment. We have tried to measure spectral characteristics of lights after transmitting through a single sheet of cellophane paper. We can see single colored lights by eyes, however, very broad background which means that the light contains many other wavelengths. So it is not good to use a single sheet to get a single color. We found three or four layers of cellophane paper were relatively good. We suggest that teachers should use three layers of cellophane paper for obtaining a single color light from a normal light source. But, in this case, a single color light is not enough bright to demonstrate because of low transparency to 55.2%. Four layers are even worse just to 45%. To use a cellophane paper as a filter, a very bright source of light was required. We suggest the light from a beam projector instead of a flashlight. When a beam projector as a white light source was used, three layers of cellophane paper as a filter was very good for the experiment of mixing the colored lights. Satisfied results were at last attained. We found the better way. We can generate three monochromatic color lights directly from the beam projector and a computer, which is the best way as we know. We can mix lights by using mirrors to lights generated from the beam projector. Finally, this thesis will give the information about the points to keep in mind, the precautions and etc. to the people who write a schoolbook, a guidebook for teacher, experimental report and a guidebook of experiment, so lead positive participation to students in experiment.
