The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the result of confirming the prediction on cognitive conflicts and conceptual changes when students learn the concept of weightlessness, and to identify how differently the result of confirming the prediction influences on cognitive conflicts and conceptual changes by physics achievement levels at schools. The 186 high school students participated in this research, including those who have unscientific preconception excluded from the items, however, their predictions were correct. They were asked to make answers in the pretest composed of two items on the concept of weightlessness. Through the demonstration on either of two items of the pretest, the researcher demanded the students to identify whether their predictions were correct or not. In addition, the students' cognitive conflicts were measured. After finishing all of this procedure, the researcher conducted a brief instructional treatment to the students on the subject, and then confirmed conceptual change through the postconceptual test. The results of this study are as follows: Firstly, cognitive conflicts and conceptual changes happened more meaningfully to the students who predicted incorrectly compared with those who predicted correctly. Secondly, in the case of the students who got good grades, relating to the result of confirming the prediction they didn't show significantly cognitive conflicts and conceptual changes. In the case of the students who got poor grades, on the other hand, the scores of cognitive conflicts and the postconcept in the incorrect results of confirming the predictions tended to be higher than in the correct results of confirming the prediction. In other words, it was demonstrated that the results of the confirming the prediction had more effect on the cognitive conflicts and conceptual changes in the case of the students who got poor grades than in the case of the students who got good grades. From these results, it is concluded that the students who identified that their predictions were correct experienced cognitive conflicts, but their cognitive conflicts and conceptual changes were weaker than those of the students who identified that their predictions were incorrect. Consequently, presenting the discordant items which are difficult for students to predict correctly is indispensible in order to draw desirable conceptual changes. And it is also identified that by physics scores at schools, the result of confirming the prediction influences differently on cognitive conflicts and conceptual changes.
