The water-colour painting has a long historical background and has developed its unique characteristics and techniques different from those of the other paintings.
In fact there may not be a genre as generalized as water-colour painting.
In Korea, there might be no one who has not been educated about water-colour painting in school. However, even if it is widely known in general, it could be said that it tends to fall behind the other paintings in its techhiques and creative varieties. We could say that it has just continued to exist.
The first reason for this is that we lacked the professional knowledge about water-colour painting.
The second reason is this. As water-colour painting has been dealt mainly in school education, it has been known to many people though, it was our reality that we regard it as a technique for some esquise and the entrance education. As the techniques and materials of the water-colour painting was introduced into Korea through Japanese, the methods of its teaching and working was narrow. That is to say, the uniform of its style and its expression from its introductive period has been supposed problematic and such influences might have destroyed the creativity and autonomy of the water-colour works. As its results, the Korean water-colour paintings has not been freed from the fixed ideas and had the regulations that water colour painting shoud have the transparency, the exquisiteness of the brush moving, and the vividness, the clearity, the suggestiveness of the expression. The artists also have unconsciously accepted these as the characteristics of water-colour paintings. Under these influences, we generally think water colour painting light and fresh.
The third reason is that it has some problems of the unstability of its materials, of its changable colours and of the reservation of its works though it is now somehow supplemented.
The fourth reason is that the convenience and swift making of its instruments made the favorate people think it is not of high-quality. But the more important reason is that there have not been so many masters of water colour paintings in the world.
This study aimed at finding the unique position of the water color painting and the methods to develop it, correcting the wrong fixed ideas about it, reviving its pictorial characteristics and examining its indefinite possibility.
For these purposes, we discussed the following subjects.
First, we tried to arrange the basic understanding about water colour painting by examining its concept, its background, the characteristics of its materials and its pictorial characteristics.
Second, we examind its unique creative techniques of expressions. The important techniques reflecting the attractiveness of water colour painting is those utilizing the qualities of water, its instruments, its materials, and its various colours. These thechniques are being used by many present artists.
Third, we examined the extention of its various expressions and the possibility of its creativity, considering the unique worlds in the works of artists and the various techniques of water colour paintings. For example, we reflected on the Korean artists, the late Park Young Seong, Pae Dong Sin who cultivated his own world with Korean nativeness and Chon Seong Ki who attempted various techniques of water colour paintings, and we analyzed also the unique techniques of Andrew Wyeth's work, and suggesting the unique and indefinite possibility of its techniques, we considered on the further possibility of water colour paintings, and insisted the water colour painting has the indefinite possibility of its expression and creation, not abandoning its proper qualities.
As a conclusion, we could say that recently many artists attempt to find the various techniques of water colour paintings, the stability of its materials and established its proper pictoral characteristics, showing various worlds created only by it. That is, the great works with various expressions increased, freed from the old simple fixed techniques like spreading, overlapping and spilling. And the water colour painting is being established as a good genre of art, accompanied with the development of its techniques of expression and of its materials including high quality paints. We could have confidence that this is a genre to develop infinitely.
Therefore in this period when the general consciousness about water colour painting is changing and its favorate people is rapidly increasing, we should reappreciate the techniques of expressions based on the artists' personalities. Thus, we should study the plan of its works, the choice of its motives and its techniques of expression in many aspects and try to get various changes.
We expect the further studies abou water colour paintings after this study.
