Titanium is widely used in dental and medical field as metallic implant material. Because titanium is a very reactive metal, when it is exposed to air a thermodynamically very stable oxide film is formed at once. This oxide film is very thin and it protects the metal from corrosion instantaneously and increase the biocompatibility. However, the oxide layer formed would not be ideal, and it would be supposed that the chemical composition, crystalline characteristics, and surface micro-morphology of the oxide film formed would be various by the different conditions when it is formed. The characteristics of the metallic implant material's surface would be expected to play an important role in successful implant osseointegration. The objective of this study was to evaluate the changes of micro morphology, roughness, crystal structure and chemical composition of titanium surface after natural oxidation, passivation, and various thermal oxidation treatment. Moreover, this study will investigate the effect of titanium surface oxide characteristics on the formation of calcium phosphate in Eagle's minimum essential medium (MEM). ASTM grade 2 commercially pure titanium (cp Ti) disks of 10 mm diameter were wet ground and polished with serial polishing up to 2,000 grit SiC paper, ultrasonically cleaned with distilled water and ethanol, followed by cleansing with deionized water and drying. Eight treatment groups were prepared. Cleansed as-received samples (AS-R group) were passivated with 50℃ 30% nitric acid for 15 minutes to make the PAS group. The Ti-700 group was made by treating the AS-R samples at 530℃ for 40 min for stress relieving, followed by annealing at 700℃ for 90 min, and then slow cooling to room temp, For Ti-530 group, Ti disks were heated at 530℃ for 40 minutes and slow cooled to room temperature. Ti-600 group was produced by heating Ti-530 samples at 600℃ for 40 min. The Ti-800, Ti-900, and Ti-1000 groups were produced by heating Ti-700 samples again at each heating temperature for 2 hrs, followed by cooling to room temp. In order to analyze the various surface properties of the prepared samples, we have investigated the micro-morphology and roughness using FE-SEM and profilometer. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) was used to investigate the crystalline structure of titanium oxide thin films, X-ray photoelectroscopy (XPS) was used to evaluate the composition and chemical binding states of the oxides. The results were as follows: 1. Scratch lines formed during sample preparation were observed in AS-R and PAS samples, about 10~30 nm-sized nano particles were distributed on the surface of Ti-530 and Ti-600 samples. Needle-like crystals were formed on Ti-700 samples, and granular crystals were formed from Ti-800 samples. As the temperature increased higher up to 900℃ and 1000℃, the crystal grain size was increased dramatically. 2. The roughness of Ti-530 samples showed a average value of 1.65㎛, which is higher value than those of #2000 SiC polished AS-R and PAS samples (1,02 and 1.07㎛, respectively). Ti-600 and Ti-700 samples showed decreased surface roughnesses (1.28 and 1.09 ㎛) than that of Ti-530 (1,65㎛), However, by the treatment temperatures higher than Ti-800 group the oxide crystal sizes increased resulting in dramatic increase of roughness for the samples of Ti-900 and Ti-1000 groups (2.23 and 4.5e ㎛, respectively). 3. On XRD analysis, only Ti metal peaks were observed in AS-R and PAS samples, and peaks of TiO_(2) anatase (004) plane were started to appear for Ti-530 and Ti-600 samples. At the Ti-700 samples, peaks of anatase were observed clearly, and peaks of rutile (100) plane started to appear. At the Ti-800 samples, peaks of anatase and rutile were observed. At the samples of Ti-900 and Ti-1000, only rutile peaks were observed, and this indicates that rutile structure becomes dominant at high heat treatment temperatures. 4. In XPS survey spectra for Ti surfaces, Ti, O, N, C, and Si were detected. On high resolution XPS spectrum for the O 1s peak, peaks of OH and H_(2)O together with oxygen binding to TiO_(2) were observed. On contrary to the data of 57-XRD, peaks of TiO_(2) together with Ti metal were observed for the AS-R and PAS samples on high resolution XPS spectrum. 5. After immersing each samples in MEM for 7 days, calcium phosphate (Ca-P) crystallites were appeared on the surface of PAS, and there was no Ca-P deposition on AS-R samples. For all the heat treated samples, Ca-P were deposited all over the specimen surfaces. However, the micro-morphology of the formed Ca-P were various depending to the treatment groups, Especially, Ca-P was most densely deposited on the surface of Ti-700 samples, which was confirmed by the SEM and EDS data. This result would be due to the fact that chemically more active anatase structure was dominant and the size of the TiO_(2) crystals, which would be act as nucleation site, was small on Ti-700 samples. In conclusion, the crystalline and chemical structure, micro-morphology, and surface roughness of titanium oxides were various by the difference of oxidation conditions. And, this difference in surface characteristics affected on the degree of Ca-P formation on Ti samples in MEM solution. These results would give an important information for the development of titanium surface treatment methods to improve the ability of osseointegration.
