Regional environment changes due to the construction of the draining waterway in nam river dam, kyongnam province, southeast korea원문보기

Today, unlike past rivers, there are few rivers in natural condition in Korea, because of the constructions of artificial banks, and dams, the river straightening, river-covering, and irrigation canals etc., all parts including higher, lower and mouths of rivers.
The Kahwa river of this study area, a small river which had once run toward Sacheon bay, was separated from Nam river by Naknam Mt. range in the Southeast coast of Korea. Construction of Nam river Dam resulted to the excavation of the Naknam range and connected the Kahwa river toward Sacheon bay with Yousu stream, a tributary of Nam river. As an artificial route of discharged water, the Kahwa river has been discharging the most amount of flooding overflowed waters at the heavy downpour, to the Sacheon bay in the South coast.
As a result, lots of landscapes including environments, land forms and vegetation have changed in the Kahwa river and Sacheon bay. Also, there were changes in lots of landscape and use in Jinju city and Nam river, too.
The results of the survey on this study area are following.
First, excavating construction for Nam river artificial draining waterway construction cut the Naknam range and connected the Kahwa river to Yousu stream, resulted in the expansion of the boundary of river valley. In flooding season the peak discharge of Nam river water increases the flux and speed of water in the Kahwa river. Active erosion of running water has increased the width of the river and exposed the bedrock in the riverbed. The bedrock in Kahwa river is not so resistable to weathering, because it is in the layers of sandstone and shale formed in the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic era. The imbricate depositional structure of the bedrock has been distributed on the Kawha river way by the lateral and alluvial supply of eroded materials. Usually, when the water flux is small, the branches and marsh land are generally separated from the main stream. At times of discharge of the flooded water, lower parts of the river valley is submerged, especially, in the tidal rising of sea level.
Second, due to the powerful hydraulic force of the draining water, Kahwa river flow in straight route in the river valley and deeply into the Sacheon bay. The accumulation of the materials supplied by the Kahwa river have made the depth of water shallow in short time, and formed the Kahwa river delta in the river mouth. A large quantity of flood flux through artificial draining way has sometimes made Sacheon bay water more fresh water. The large amount of floating materials like garbage has influenced to the marine ecosystem, and damaged fishery industry.
Third, Jinju city has expanded into new developing area such as Jangdae, Chilam, Dodong, SinanPyunggeo districts from the old center, in the vicinity of the Jinju Castle, and accelerated by the decrease of submersion damage owing to the construction of Nam river Dam and the stable control on the water level of Nam river. Jinju city has developed into the past flood plain field as residential or industrial complex, and parking lots and recreation parks. Readjustment of arable land of the Weoladanmok, Geumpyung, Jeongam, Jangji, Baeksan, Hagi, Jangpo fields except Keun, Dulan, Guhyae fields around the lower Nam river had happened before and after the construction of Nam river Dam in 1969.
Owing to the construction of the Nam river Dam artificial draining way and the stable control of the water level of Nam river and Jingyang reservoir, the submersion damage has decreased around the lower Nam river area. Also, through bank construction and readjustment of arable land, the stable land use is being carried.
Fourth, Nam river has sustained well water level like a natural river. On the riverbed, the deposit of fine or coarse grains has been distributed in harmony due to the well-matched power of erosion and accumulation. After the ecologiacl surroundings around Nam river has been stabilized, Nam river offers the villagers the feeling of mental stability. Kahwa river has many changes on the level of the river water, as it is the artificial sluice way. Due to the powerful process of erosion and accumulation, large heap of deposit has been distributed in the river way. Alluvial materials of the Kahwa river valley have been often eroded and submerged, resulting in unstable land use, and drying land with mental instability of villagers.
