Polyether urethane foams are the polymer formed with repeating urethane and urea groups. The catalytic glycolysis process is the chemical recycling method how the polyol and carbamate compounds recovered by transesterification are reused to produce new polyether urethane foams. Catalytic glycolysis was taken place in the reaction temperature of 180∼200℃ with waste polyether urethane foams, glycol and catalysts. The reaction rates were investigated by the viscosity of the reaction products at different reaction times and hydroxyl value. IR and GPC analysis showed the types of product and the molecular weight distributions. In this work, ethyleneglycol, diethyleneglycol, 1,4-butanediol and dipropyleneglycol were used to decompose polyether urethane foams and various metallic acetates(such as potassium, strontium, sodium thallium and zinc), bases(such as NaOH and KOH) and quinoline were provided as a catalyst. Ethyleneglycol was effective at high temperature in catalytic glycolysis. The catalytic activities were high in potassium, sodium, thallium acetate, NaOH and KOH. The products were contained a lot amine and carbamate compound. In strontium, zinc acetate and quioline, the reaction rate was somewhat slow. However, polyol was a lot and the amine of side-products was a little. The mechanism of the reaction was investigated from the molecular weight and the component distributions of the products by GPC and IR analysis. The transesterification of the urethane groups was faster than that of urea groups. Adding K acetate catalyst which has a large ionization tendency accelerated the transesterification reaction rate. Catalytic glycolysis in active potassium acetate and in inactive potassium acetate were processed in the same reaction path but the content of product components was different because of the reaction rate difference. The foams which were prepared by blending recovered polyol with virgin polyol from 5 to 20 wt% showed better physical properties in tensile strength, hardness, tear strength, and compressive strength compared to those of polyether urethane foams from virgin polyol. Amine and diamine content in the glycolysis product of Lab. foams and system seat foam was very different. Recycled polyether urethane foam by the product of system seat foams which had a lot diamine increased the tensile strength, hardness, tear strength, and compressive strength but reduced the density gradually.
