Nowadays, retro to the past fashion is appeared just as often as new challenge and trial. The style of Renaissance Era is the most often revival theme for contemporary fashion. So, this study was focused on 16C of Renaissance costume. It is investigated the characteristics of Renaissance costume through referring the literature to be able to restore the past costume as thorough as possible with the object of building database for developing new design. This study is done in two different way at the same times, direct study to restore and indirect study to refer. Direct one is restoring of the past costume as thorough as possible based on referring to the originals. And the other is referring the costume historical literature. 1. The costumes to restore is chosen among 16C famous pictures on the basis of how much they can show the typical chracteristics of 16C costume. Picture 1, 2, 3 were male costumes and picture 4, 5, 6 were female costumes. 2. Materials including textiles and ornaments which is necessarily to restore is shopped in Dongdeamoon Market. Some materials has a problem to get exactly same one in Seoul on 21C. After visiting thousand times, the materials is chosen as similar as the originals. 3. Six sets of costume is restored on the basis of referring "Patterns of Fashion" written by Janet Arnold. The costumes is restored by reinforcing bodice based on the size of waist and bust in every six works. 1) The Work of No. 1. The pattern is made after padding to reinforce around bust and stomacher is used to present bulky bodice. Pattern is made to present the analyzed silhouettes of costumes as follows; Shirts is increased on length and width up to 30 % more than the doublet to consider the amount puffed out of slashes on doublet. The pattern of doublet is cut out straightly with similar length of jerkin because doublet is worn inside lengthened jerkin. Jerkin is cut out depending on refering the liturature only, because of it is not shown in detail. The lower part of jerkin is analyzed for a skirt, not a basis. So, deep and stiff folds are not used on this area. Gown which is lined with fur and made of velvet has lots of pleats on C.B. for bulky silhouette. 2) The Work of No. 2. It is much less bulky than the work of No. 1, but doublet is oversized in peascod belly look. The lining and fabric of front bodice is cut off with giving difference of length on C.F. Venetian breeches is cut off in one piece each side. So, there is no side seam line, a fly is attached on the closing of front. Cloak is cut off with less pleats and width fitted with oversized shoulder by padding. 3) The Work of No. 3. The doublet is more emphasized in peascod belly look, so the C.F. length difference of lining and fabric is appeared more clearly. The lower part of doublet is oversized in the shape of bags by gathering. Sleeves are detachable and shoulder wing is attached. Trunk hose is cut off in three times each because it is made of fabric piled up three layers. Lining is cut off without gathering and add the proper amount of puffing out. On the top and bottom areas is finished with darts to avoid bulky margins, because of 4 layers including pad layer is piled on. Canions is cut off in steep diagonal to fit on the legs tightly. Hanging sleeves of Cloak which is not used is cut off in shape of oval arm hole and flat tube. The amount of gather is not put on the cloak as it is shown from picture. Collar of the cloak is turn outside in front part without any collar on back neckline. 4) The Work of No. 4. The outer garment which is divided into bodice and skirt is not added any ease on the waist and bust except increasing size a little bit than body size for wearing corset and farthingales inside. The closing of bodice and skirt which is located on C.F. is cut off without any margins for closing layer. The amount of margins on sleeve is minimized, because two sleeve is attached. Collar of backward is extended from bodice. The front part of collar is only cut off separately. This is a typical Spanish female garment. So, the back part of farthingale is made of without oversizing with gathers through referring the literature to deliver the feeling of stiffeness and formness. 5) The Work of No. 5. The silhouette is emphasized near shoulder and below waist. It is made up of 7 pieces of pattern, because of bodice has tight fit to body. Elongated waist line in front emphasized slim waist. Trunk sleeve is oversized with two pieces which has lots of ease. Also, it has the difference of width and length in pattern between lining and fabric. The skirt which is separated from bodice is cut off with dropped waist line along the waistline of bodice. The direction of pleats is presented as it is shown in the picture. The length of skirt is adjusted after wearing farthingale and hip pad. 6) The Work of No. 6. It is little bit different in the basic size between under gown and over gown, which is worn one over another. This farthingale and hip pad is little bit different from the Work of No. 5's. Farthingale is oval shape which is pressed down in front and back. Hip pad is also short in the length of C.B. Under gown is consist of bodice, skirt, stomacher, flounce, and sleeve. To present excessive gather, lots of fabric is needed. Two sleeves are used for trunk sleeve. Over gown is consist of bodice, hanging sleeve, skirt. However, pattern is made on the basis of reference, because of it is not shown in picture. 4. The way of sewing is based on hand sewing for details and machin- sewing for seam. Quilting into lining is used giving the fabric stiffness to maintain the form from the heavy padding. Also the part of piles on margins is used darts instead of gather, because of reducing bulkiness of seam. General closing methods are hook & eyes, and lacing with points. Female costume is much more complicated in sewing and making a pattern than male's. Ribbon tapes which is used for decoration is also done the role as fixdant of dress form. Strong bone is used to fix the form of dress.
