The purpose of this study was to examine how parents perceived elementary school teacher roles in terms of academic education and guidance and what they expected from teachers in an effort to find out whether there was any gap between their perception of teacher roles and their expectation for them. The method of this study were 321 parents from four selected elementary schools in the city of Changwon. Out of them, 163 parents had children who were in their third year, and 158 parents had children who were in their sixth year. The instrument used in this study was prepared by reconstructing what's used in earlier studies to suit the purpose of the study. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed. To see if there were any disparities between their expectations for and perceptions of teacher roles in academic education and guidance, paired- samples t-test was implemented, and two-way ANOVA was employed to determine the influence of their personal characteristics including gender, age, child school year, education and economic standing. The findings of this study were as follows: First, concerning academic education, many of the parents investigated hoped teachers to have ample professional knowledge about every subject, utilize a wide variety of learning materials in class and give assignments in consideration of child ability. But teachers fell short of their expectations, and they should put more efforts into enhancing their expertise and offering better instruction using various materials. In addition, school governing committee, which is joined by parent members, should try to gather opinions from parents. Second, as for guidance, a lot of the parents wanted teachers to give weight to role-division activities and personality education. Therefore, teachers should understand students, treat them with respect and persuade them to behave better instead of inflicting corporal punishment in case they make any mistakes. Furthermore, they should consider how to encourage them to seek their advice about all sorts of troubles they face. Third, the fathers wanted teachers to correct their children's wrong actions even by inflicting corporal punishment, and the mothers hoped them to guide children's social relations and assign their seats from children's perspectives. Teachers should try to guide children properly in consideration of their opinions. Especially, teachers in charge of lower graders should put more discreet efforts into developing their right living attitude and habits, as the parents whose children were in the lower grades had higher expectations.
