The purpose of this phenomenological study is to understand the meaning of the auditory hallucination of the persons with schizophrenia. The research question of this paper is 'What is the meaning of the lived experience of auditory hallucination of the persons with schizophrenia?' For this study, 11 participants were chosen from among the persons with schizophrenia with their consent and they have symptom of the auditory hallucination and also can communicate each other. For gathering data, a indepth interview has made with the 11 participants who were in C university hospital at Gwangju city during from August 1st, 2002 to July 30th, 2003. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's(1978) method of phenomenology. From the transcripts 105 significant sentences and phrases were selected and 10 clusters of themes were categorized from 85 significant statements. These results were integrated into the essential structure of the lived experience of auditory hallucination of the persons with schizophrenia. 1. An expression of obscurity comes from the situation that they cannot protect themselves any longer from harsh loneliness. 2. Unusual interesting can get out of the loneliness. 3. Being caught by an auditory hallucination against his will continuously. 4. Putting themselves to death to escape from the mental anguish. 5. Feeling excessively anxiety for something they audible only for themselves. 6. To be needed someone to be true presence. 7. Wanting to talk about the auditory hallucination with the others. 8. Become to have a confidence themselves of settling it down, when they feel getting an aid from the others. 9. Find some other ways of getting out of the auditory hallucination with the confidence. 10. Be free from the auditory hallucination, when they are maintained continuous personal relationship. This study will provide with a new perspectives to understand the lived experience of auditory hallucination of the persons with schizophrenia. and also will be considered as the basis of the nursing intervention development to decrease the auditory hallucination.
