This study is to present data for the Jindo's future development suggestions. It researched its environment for growth and behavioural characteristics in the Jindo, measured 33 specific parts of 195 Jindoes. It also researched coxofemoral joint (hip dysplasia) and microsatellite loci polymorphism, using 30 microsatellite markers. The study conducted a survey to one hundred and three households about how much they understand the Jindo and their behavioural characteristics. It found 83% of those surveyed said that attacks to the owner 'should not happen under any circumstances', whereas the attacks to the other people or other dogs 'might be possible', 32% and 49% answered respectively. Their thoughts according to the object turns out to be quite different (P<0.01). The study also carried out a survey about currently-grown Jindoes behaviours. Reactions in humans and animals' approaching turn out that Jindoes reacted more aggressively to humans and animals than to their owners (P<0.01). To analyze their Jindoes' behavioural characteristics, the researcher juxtaposed their behavioural characteristics by 5 levels. It found that Jindoes' loyalty to the owner and performance as a watchdog have reached the highest level, but the intimacy with others and tendency to attack children stand at the lower level. The body of the Jindo, Korean native dog, was measured in the present study. One hundred and ninety five Jindoes were randomly selected from the 1,985 dogs in the Jindo County in August 1998, which were screened by the judging committee of the County and registered by inserting electronic chips in the withers. They were about a year and half old, and were white and fawn dogs. A total of 33 parts of the body were measured using calipers and tapes. The average height, average body length, and average height: body length ration was bigger in dogs than bitches. No differences were found between the Jindoes of the two coat colors in these measurements. The head was divided into three parts; the skull, ear and nose. Each part was divided again, and a total of 14 parts of the head were measured using calipers. Measurements of the skull part and skull index were bigger in dogs than in bitches, but no differences were found between colors. No differences were found in the measurements of the ear part between sexes or coat colors, except the distance between two ears in which the distance was longer in dogs than in bitches. In the measurements of the nose, the width of rostral part was larger in fawns than in whites and in dogs than in bitches. The rest were larger in dogs than in bitches. The tail type was recorded and the length of the tail measured. It was found that the Jindo has three types of tail; rolled, sickle-shaped, and pole-shaped. The rolled tail was most frequent, followed by sickle-shaped and pole-shaped tail. The rolled tail was longer than the pole-shaped tail. The body length ratio of pole-shaped tail was smaller than the other two types of tails. The pelvic radiographs of 47 clinically normal Jindoes were investigated to evaluate the coxofemoral joints, prospectively. The hip joints were graded according to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals criteria. Of the 47 Jindo evaluated, 8 (17%) were graded as dysplastic, 3 (6.4%) were mildly dysplastic, 3 (6.4%) were moderately dysplastic, and 2 (4.3%) were severly dysplastic. Of the 39 Jindoes graded as normal, 16 (34%) were classified as having excellent hip joint phenotype, 15 (31.9%) were classified as having fair, and 8 (17%) were classified as good. Each hip joint was scored based on the British Veterinary Association/The Kennel Club hip scoring system. The normal hip joint (excellent, fair, good) received score less than 5, while dysplastic hip joint (mild, moderate, severe CHD) received score form 5 to 29. Norberg angle (r = 0.76) and femoral angle of inclination (r = 0.6) were in inverse proportion to grade of the hip joint (P<0.01). The width of medial joint space was in proportion to grade of hip joint (r = 0.7, P<0.01). Thirty microsatellite markers were analyzed microsatellite polymorphism in one hundred Jindoes. Alleles per locus were observed from six to thirty two. Also average number of allele was 12.87. The observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.25 to 0.87, whereas the expected heterozygosity varied between 0.59 and 0.93. Polymorphic Informative Content (PIC) value in all markers were analyzed is relatively high as above 0.5. At a few microsatellite loci, the chi-square testing was obstructed by the presence of rare alleles. Exclusion power as indices of capability for parentage testing in all markers excluded 134, 671, RVC1, CCX30, 2079 is relatively high as above 0.5.
