A PVSA process with two equilibrium beds and one kinetic bed was developed to overcome the limitation of 94% O2 purity from air in the adsorption technology. To develop the PVSA process, two-bed VSA process for air separation and two-bed PSA process for oxygen purification were designed at first. From the VSA and the PSA processes, higher than 90% O2 from air and 99.8+% O2 from oxygen enriched feeds (higher than 90% oxygen) could be produced, respectively. Then, two different cycles of the PVSA process combined an equilibrium separation with a kinetic separation were designed. To prevent an additional energy cost from the PVSA operation, the operating pressure was fixed from 0.4 to 3.0 atm. In addition, the effluent gas from the purification bed with CMS was backfilled to the equilibrium bed with zeolite 10X to maintain a high recovery. The both cycles could produce directly higher than 97% oxygen from air. The PVSA process I introducing single blowdown step produced the O2 product with 97.4% purity and 67% recovery while the PVSA process II with two-consecutive blowdown step produced the O2 product with 99.2% purity and 47% recovery. Since the developed processes were focused on minimizing N2 amount and maximizing O2 purity from air to prevent a NOx generation from the application of combustion processes, the amounts of N2 in the product were in the level of 4000-5000 ppm at the PVSA I and several tens of ppm at the PVSA II. Therefore, it is expected that the suggested process may produce directly 99.8+% O2 from air, which is a standard O2 specification of semi-conductor industries, by using improved adsorbents and optimized operating condition. A non-isothermal dynamic model incorporating mass, energy, and momentum balances was developed to predict the process dynamics and experimental results. The Gluekauf’s LDF model with constant diffusivity was used to the equilibrium bed while the concentration-dependent rate models were applied to the kinetic bed.
