The performance characteristics of composite electrolyte membrane prepared by using hot press method have been studied for application to proton exchange membrane fuel cell with varying the embedded materials in the membrane, such as porous PTFE membrane, Pt particle, and mordenite powder. Then, on the basis of these results, the effect of Pt on mechanical properties and ionic conductivity and mordenite contents in the composite electrolyte membrane was also investigated. In order to prepare the composite electrolyte membrane dispersed porous PTFE membrane, perfluorosulfonylfluoride copolymer resin was hot pressed into a sheet. New preparative technique was adopted by sandwich porous PTFE membrane in the pre-formed copolymer sheet. From the results of mechanical properties, the composite electrolyte membrane showed higher performance than Nafion 115 membrane due to the interfacial contact between porous PTFE membrane and perfluorosulfonylfluoride copolymer resin. The stability of the single cell using composite electrolyte membrane was examined for 100 hr under the application of a constant load of 500 mAcm2. The self-humidifying composite electrolyte membrane was composed of two membranes consisted of perfluorosulfonylfluoride copolymer resin and fine Pt particles lying between them coated by a sputtering method. From the comparison of performance for the single cells using self-humidifying and as received membranes, higher performance of self-humidifying cell was attributed to the fact that the presence of Pt particles in the membrane increases the proton conductivity of the membrane, due to the generation of water molecules on the Pt particles by the recombination of permeated hydrogen and oxygen. The mechanism for water production is strongly substantiated by the experimental result from IR spectrum with absorption peaks corresponding to the characteristic OH stretching bond, observed only in the case of the self-humidifying membrane kept in hydrogen and oxygen mixture gases. The effect of Pt loading in the self-humidifying composite electrolyte membrane for proton exchange membrane fuel cell on the water uptake was investigated. The optimum amount of Pt particles embedded in the membrane for the self-humidifying composite electrolyte membrane fuel cell was determined to be about 0.15 mgcm2, based upon the measurements of single cell performance characteristics and resistance. Nafionmordenite composite electrolyte membranes for the operation of proton exchange membrane fuel cells above 100 oC were prepared by mixing of H+-form mordenite powders and perfluorosulfonylfluoride copolymer resins. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell operated above 100 oC reduces CO poisoning as well as passivation of the Pt anode electrocatalyst by other condensable species. The physico-chemical properties of composite electrolyte membranes were investigated by mechanical property and proton conductivity measurements. As the mordenite content increases, at the high temperature region, the proton conductivity of composite electrolyte membranes increased due to the late dehydration rate of existent water in the mordenite. Also, from the results of current-voltage relationship for single cells under 130 oC, the composite electrolyte membrane cell with 10 wt.% mordenite showed better performance than that of the others over the entire current density range. This result indicated that the existent water in the composite membrane containing 10 wt.% mordenite was higher than that with the others, thereby maintaining its conductivity. The Nafionmordenite composite electrolyte membrane prepared by this present method is thought to be a satisfactory proton exchange membrane for proton exchange membrane fuel cell operation above 100 oC.
