Recently many biological processes have been developed for the removal of nitrogen and phosphorous. Most of these processes use organic substrate for phosphorous release at first and need to feed chemical organic matter to the anoxic zone because it is difficult to secure organic substrate essential to denitrification reaction when domestic sewage with low concentration of organic matter is treated. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new biological process technology for the removal of nitrogen and phosphorous which can use organic substrate efficiently. This study is to develop a new BNR process using organic substrate for predenitrification at first to get effective denitrification and phosphorous release reaction in the condition of influent with low concentration of organic matter. In this study, anoxic zone was placed in front of anaerobic zone and influent sewage was fed directly into the anoxic zone. An anoxic-anaerobic-aerobic pilot scale BNR plant was installed consisting of 10 reactors in series and operated from stage 1 to 14 controlling influent and internal flow rate, HRTs and SRTs.To compare the performance of the MLE and A2O process with the anoxic-anaerobic-aerobic BNR process(Biological Nutrient Removal Technology, Bio-NET), the profiles of SCOD, nitrogen and phosphorous were investigated. The experimental results showed that Bio-NET process was capable of successfully denitrifying high NOx--N in the nitrified recycle, resulting in a NOx --N concentration of less than 1.0mgL N in the anoxic zone. Denitrification and phosphorous release were accomplished due to abundant organic substrates in the anoxic zone located in this process at the head end of the process train. In fact, the anoxic zone appeared to act as an anaerobic one, since rapid denitrification occurred. Phosphorous release continued without any nitrate inhibition due to low NOx--N concentration of less than 2.0mgL in the anaerobic zone. When Bio-NET process with step-feed, MLE and A2O process were operated in the similar operating conditions, denitrification and phosphorus release in the anoxic zone also occurred in both the Bio-NET process and the MLE process. The Bio-NET process was effective to maintain the effluent of low concentration of phosphorous because the low NOx--N concentration in the anoxic zone and the following anaerobic zone did not cause any nitrate inhibition with respect to phosphorous release. The influent step-feed, with 50% of the influent introduced to the head end of the anaerobic zone, offered no adverse effects on nitrification as well as denitrification. Therefore, it is expected that the Bio-NET process could be applied to sewage treatment plants which have the influent of low concentration of organic substrate and high concentration of nitrogen in urban sewage.
