The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of perceived stress level, self-control, and self-esteem on their level of internet usage among college students and also to determine which of these variables explain level of internet usage the most. Two-hundred twenty-eight undergraduate students enrolled in universities throughout Seoul were surveyed for the study. The instruments used for this study were the ''Stress Index'' of Choi, Hae Rim(1986), Kendell and Wilcox (1979) ''Self-Control Rating Scale(SCRS)'' revised by Song, Won Young(1998), the ''Self-Esteem Scale(SES)'' of Rosenberg(1965) revised by Jeon, Byoung Jae(1974), and Yoon, Jae Hee(1998)''s version of the ''Internet Addiction Test''(Young, 1998). The data was analyzed with descriptive statistics, stepwise multiple regression, and Pearson''s correlations. The results of this study were as follows: First, approximately 60% of the male respondents and 68% of the female respondents reported that they use internet ''nearly every day''. Approximately forty-three percent of men and 42.7% of women reported they are on-line on average of 1 to 2 hours each day. Most respondents(70.5% of males and 65.6% of females) used internet at home(in their own room). Sixty percent of male students and 74% of female students had been internet users for 4 years or for a longer period of time. Their internet usage patterns were varied: women used internet mostly for an e-mail(44.8%) while men used it for an e-mail(28.8%), web surfing(22.0%), information searching(21.2%), and gaming(21.2%). Second, in terms of the level of internet usage among college students, 51.5% of men and 46.9% of women surveyed could be classified as ''potential internet addicts''. Approximately forty-four percent of male students and 45.8% of female students were found to be ''non-internet addicts'' while small fractions(4.5% of men and 7.3% of women) of respondents were measured to be ''internet addicts''. Third, the variables explained the level of internet usage for the men in the study were level of perceived stress and self-control; male students who experienced higher level of stress in their college lives tended to use internet more often and men who had greater self-control tended to use internet less often. For the women in the study, personal stress levels contributed on internet usage the most; women experienceing higher levels of personal stress tended to use internet more often.
