Lyric song is an ideal harmony of poetry and music. Especially, Wolf who inherited Schubert, Schumann, and Braahms is the most superior composer in the lyric song area. He composed series of lyric songs based on poems of Heine, Eichendorff, and Goethe's. "Mo¨rike Liederbuch", one of the series of lyric songs based on Mo¨rike's poem, is composed in 1888 and consists of 53 pieces. In this thesis, in order to research how Wolf represents the consistency between poetry and music, we analyze 4 pieces of the Mo¨rike Liederbuch included in the Recital Program: "Er ist's", "Gebet", "Lebe wohl", and "Denk es, o Seele!". We can see that Wolf conforms a musical representation to a suitable word, and embodys the representation of poetic diction through harmony, rhythm, accompany, and melody. In addition, we can find that Wagner had a great effect on his lyric songs. The typical examples are declamation technique and progression in chromatic scale. The characteristics of Wolf's songs is that there are many pieces that give a feeling of reciting a poem rather than of singing a song. We can especially find the characteristics in "Denk es, o Seele!". We become to believe that he placed more weight on poetry than music for the representation of poetry. Moreover, understanding the nuance of German poetry itself is a most important pre-requisite for playing a poetic song.
