Activated coffee chars were prepared from coffee waste by chemical activation with chemical agents(zinc chloride, sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide) and physical activation in steam. In this study, the following processes were carried out: roasting step, carbonization step and chemical activation or physical activation step. The roasting step of coffee waste was carried out at 300~400 ℃ for 10 minutes. The optimum condition of carbonization was at 650℃ for 60 minutes under no air. Two methods were used for the activation of coffee char, such as physical and chemical activation. From the results, the most important parameter in chemical activation of coffee char was found to be chemical ratio of activation agents. Activated coffee chars prepared by various activation method were characterized in terms of nitrogen BET surface area, BJH pore volume, and pore size distribution at 77K. N_(2)-BET surface areas and total pore volume of activated coffee char produced by chemical activation using ZnCl_(2), NaOH or KOH were measured as about 1110~2442㎡/g and 0.51 ~1.19㎤/g, respectively. N2-BET surface areas and total pore volume of activated coffee char by physical activation were measured as about 570~1093㎡/g and 0.26~0.54㎤/g, respectively. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were used to observe the porosity and surface of activated coffee chars. It was shown that active surface and many pores were formed after activation. The preparation of activated coffee char from coffee waste was successfully carried out, which previews a possibility for exploitation of resources by recycling the waste.
