Rhythm is the most primitive of the musical elements and the first musical response of human being, so it has been used to express our feeling since prehistory. This thesis focuses on the music education philosophy and the rhythm instruction methods of Carl Orff and Zoltan Kodaly, whose influences has spread after the 20th century, and also tries to propose the basic materials for rhythm instruction and explore the possibilities of their application to the classroom. Orff and Kodaly both recognized the great importance of rhythm instruction in music education and suggested several specific rhythm instruction methods. This study intends to research the following by studying the related literatures and materials. 1. Music education philosophy, basic elements of rhythm instruction, and rhythm instruction methods proposed by Orff and Kodaly 2. Similarities and differences of instructional methods between Orff and Kodaly According to the results of this study, the main points of rhythm instruction methods are summarized as follows. First, Orff suggests teaching children rhythm shown in speech pattern, by physical movements and with the percussion. In the rhythm instruction through speech, students learn the rhythm of everyday speech by singing and clapping. They also learn the concept of stress, time, and tone through speech in play. In the rhythm instruction through physical movements, students learn rhythm by clapping, lap-slapping, stamping etc. In the rhythm instruction through the percussion, children learn rhythm by playing the percussion ensemble or adding the percussion to speech pattern. Second, Kodaly suggests instructing rhythm in accordance with child development and using various materials such as physical movements, games, and visual aids. The rhythm instruction through physical movements includes walking, jumping, lap-slapping, and clapping to emphasize the rhythmic characteristics of songs. And the rhythm instruction through phonetic value syllables is teaching rhythm by pronouncing the syllables representing phonetic values. In the rhythm instruction of visual aids, students learn rhythm by pictures visualizing rhythmic elements. The common features of these instructional methods are to use physical movements and speech as an important mediation of developing a sense of rhythm, to emphasize children's participation, and to pursue comprehensive music education. In conclusion, their belief to develop balanced musicality and improve human life through comprehensive rhythm instruction is one of the important principles to accept, and their specific instructional methods are applicable to our music class. It will be valuable to research to apply the common principles, beliefs, and instructional methods of Orff and Kodaly into our classroom, even though there are some non-applicable points to our education.
