Hydrogen production by natural gas thermal cracking requires the separation of hydrogen from the process stream involving light hydrocarbons (C1~C2). The pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process using activated carbon is recognised as a prominent technology for the downstream purification of hydrogen. The process performance of a PSA is usually defined by the purity and the recovery, and the optimization of PSA process by executing experiments and mathematical modelling plays a key role in maximizing profits in the process design and the operation. Typical decision variables for the optimization include step time, cycle pressure history, purge to feed (PF) ratio, and throughput, etc.Experimental and theoretical studies were made on the adsorption isotherm of single (H2, CH4, Ar, C2H4, C2H6) activated carbon and zeolite 5A adsorbents at various temperatures and pressures. Experimental isotherms were measured by the static volumetric method. Experimental data of single component were correlated by the model equations. Our study has been devoted to optimize the PSA process for hydrogen separation, following by the thermal cracking process of natural gas. Several experiments have been carried out on a bench scale PSA unit of dual activated carbon beds on 6 pressure-swinging steps. All experiments were assumed non-isothermal and non-adiabatic conditions and targeted to parametric analysis of the PSA process variables, such as adsorption time, adsorption pressures, feed rates and PF ratio. Aspen ADSIM (AspenTech, Inc.) was utilized for the estimation and the simulation of the PSA process cycles. Adsorption characteristics in a bed packed activated carbon were studied experimentally and theoretically through the breakthrough experiments of binary (H2Ar) and ternary (H2CH4Ar) system. The effects of adsorption pressure, feed flow rate and binary and ternary compositions on the breakthrough curve were observed. In this study, the energy balance was essential to the prediction of the adsorption phenomenon. The results predicted with a mathematical model agreed well with the experimental data.Combined study of the experiments and the mathematical modelling suggested an optimal set of the process conditions to maximize the purity and recovery of the hydrogen product. Specifically a plateau of hydrogen purity is found at >11 atm of adsorption pressure with >0.1 of PF ratio whereas the recovery is still a variable depends on the feed rate. For our design capacity of the experimental PSA unit, 15 LPM of feed rate guaranteed an optimal performance, and further confirmed that the PSA performance becomes poorer if the feed rate is larger than 15 LPM.
