On the assumption that the essence of education remains unchanged although educational aspects vary according to social changes, this dissertation aims to study educational theory of Plato who established the theory of Greek liberal education; what he understood education is and its purpose should be, and what structures and meanings his educational theory has. Chapter Ⅱ examines first into Plato's arguments of soul, knowledge, and justice which are the philosophical bases of his educational theory. Plato's absolute knowledge, which pursuits knowledge in order to live a life with justice, is the starting point for his theory of educational aims. Plato inquired into three parts of human soul-reason, spirit, and the appetitive faculty; what qualities they have, what roles they play, and what relationships they should have with one another. The core of Plato's soul is his theory on the will of spirit abiding by the rational judgement and decision of reason and on the control of desire complying with the judgement of reason and the will of spirit. The part of argument on epistemology examines what is the true knowledge which human beings should pursuit, what is the difference between knowledge and doxa, what qualities knowledge has, and what relationship knowledge and Form has. The argument of theory of justice studies what meanings well-being has, what relationship happiness on an individual level and qualities of soul has, and what is justice in a state or society. Chapter Ⅲ analyzes what Plato's aims of education are. On the premise that his thought on the educational aims has a definite structure which consists of three elements-awareness of The Idea of the Good, realization of eros, and construction of a just society, it is looked into what definition and qualities they have respectively. Chapter Ⅳ discusses the meanings of Plato's theory of educational aims based on his educational structure mentioned in the previous chapter. Especially, it focuses on what is the absolute knowledge resulting from the recognition of The Idea of the Good, what is Plato's thought on happiness which can be said to be the goal of eros, what statesmen are needed for a good citizen education which is an imperative task to construct a just society, and how the state is changed for such education. The education Plato advocated can be summarized to help human beings develop their reason through awakening. The education is inferred to have set a goal of recognition of The Idea of the Good, realization of eros, upon which the construction of a just society, and enjoyment of a happy life in such a society. From this deduction, the following meanings are at least concluded; First, Plato's education whose fundamental is conversion of soul aims at recognition of The Idea of the Good, namely, the pursuit of absolute knowledge. Such pursuit means that it is very important in education to get pure knowledge, which not only is an essential goal of education but also is intended to change the attitude of life by mental development liberal education sought after. The development of this attitude can be a basis for us to extensively understand our life and to have a meaning of life. Second, the pursuit of happiness through the realization of Plato's eros seems to stand opposite to the present general tendency that the material satisfaction is regarded as happiness. In fact, human desire for materialism is infinite, but it is impossible to meet such wants completely in a real life so that one of the ways to live a happy life is to control and govern them. Therefore, it is thought to be significant to minutely investigate the meaning of Plato's happiness based on harmony and good order. Finally, Plato's justice is not a vacuous state but something realized only in a society. He advocated that the ultimate aim of education should be the construction of a society where there is an ample hope for realization of his justice. From this thought of Plato's, we are able to have an opportunity to recognize and verify what a just society is like, how important the education of statesmen is to build such a society, who the good statesmen are, and what qualities the education has. Since it is not easy to find in a modern society good statesmen who devote themselves to improving their people's life, not concerning in keeping their positions or seeking their own interests, the education of them is the key issue to construct a society, in other words, an educational one where we rightly value the essence, cultivate our insights beyond tenacity for visible interests, conduct a harmonious and orderly life, and help one another.
