Recently, forest policy in the world has been oriented to the system for sustainable forest management. To keep pace with the world trend of sustainable forest management, the forest policy of Korea also has been innovated to have the sustainability in the forest resource management. To identify the sustainability in the forest resources, estimation methods are critical to the forestry professionals. Hence, this study was aimed at the development of a new method for attaining sustainability in forest resource management in Korea. Data were collected from the sample plots in 'Nawon' of Choongchungnam Provinces, from June 2004 to August 2004. The study site has different size of sample plots for different kind of data collection. The sizes of the sample plots were of 1m, 2m, 5m, 10m, and 15m radius. Vegetation communities, regeneration, logging, damage of tree, dead wood, basic tree measurements, and soil parameters were surveyed in the sample plots. In order to select suitable sampling method for sustainable forest management, systematic sampling, systematical cluster sampling, and stratified cluster sampling were compared in terms of the feasibility for the sustainable forest management. The study were made out forest resource statistics by 5 criteria and 28 indicators of sustainable forest management, and analyzed the availability and applicability of criteria and indicators based on data collected in sampling plots. The systematical cluster sampling was finally selected as the result sampling method for sustainable forest management. The study site should be used by 4km×4km to divided the size of the lattice units, and then, the sample plots should be made as cluster of triangle-shape in cross points. The clusters should be consisted of a main plot and three sub-plots, in order to collect field data, and sampling plots should be arranged with a distance 50m each from a main plot. The applicability for 5 criteria and 28 indicators of sustainable forest management in the systematic cluster sampling had 68% probability. The estimation methods of each criteria applicable in new sampling design system were also provided in this study. This study will provide information about an efficient estimation method of forest resource statistics appropriate for sustainable forest management in Korea, and will also help to streamline the information provision for reporting to international processes. However, in future, it will be needed to develop a method for providing multi-resources information by combining remote sensing image with field data. Such a modification will help to make the provision of forest resources information more efficient and precise.
