The purpose of this study is to examine how leisure activities teenagers participate in an have an effect on their emotional and stress relief. In doing this study, we investigated their objective characteristics, emotion and stress. We focused on 536 middle school and high school students in Chungju, Chungcheongbuk-do. For this study, we utilized KEES(Korea Emotion Exercise Scale, Yoo Jin and Kim Jong-o, 2002) and Stress Scale(Kang Shin-uk, 1997). The results are as following: First of all, the difference in emotional and stress factors, based on each gender, showed that boys were higher than girls in terms of pride, catharsis and achievement. Second, the difference in emotional and stress factors, based on the level of the school, was apparent in middle school students compared to high school students in terms of fun, vigor, catharsis, and achievement. High school students, however, showed us a higher level of stress factors than middle school students. Third, the difference in emotional and stress factors, based on whether they do leisure activities or not, turned out to be remarkable in the participating groups compared to the non-participating groups in all factors. There was, however, no difference in stress factors. Fourth, there was a difference in emotional and stress factors, based on whether they participated in leisure activities frequently or not. The study showed that the groups that participated in leisure activities frequently and positively were higher in the emotional factors than the groups that participated in leisure activities less and more passively. On the other hand, the former groups were lower in the stress factors than the latter groups. Fifth, it was shown that the frequency of the participation in leisure activities had an effect on stress as well as on all the low mental factors(fun, pride, vigor, catharsis, achievement). It was reported that passion(positive, normal, negative) in the participation in leisure activities had an strong effect on the students' emotional and stress relief.
