I studied in this thesis Grig's musical backgrounds and characteristics who represents Norway's nationalism and analysed his Piano Sonata Op. 7. The most distinctive characteristic of Grig's works is that on the basis of the German Romanticism, Grig used Norwegian folk and traditional music for his composition to express the hue of the folk music. In this context, Piano Sonata Op.7, which was composed in 1865, is the only piece which has good mixture of Romantic and folk-like contents in a traditional form. Also, this can be considered a traditional work of Grieg as he changed his style from the traditional music to the nationalistic music. I can summary his characteristics like this. First, the musical structure of this piece is in a traditional sonata form. This Sonata consists of 4 movements. The first movement is in a Sonata form, the second is in n ternary form, the third movement is in a compound ternary form, and the fourth movement is in a Sonata form. The keys of each movements are closely related through out the whole Sonata. The first themes of the first, the third, and the fourth movement are in e minor. Also, in the development of each movement, the themes are developed and adapted, such as repetitions and variations. So we can find he is developing the theme with a unified structure. Second, in these traditional structural elements, it also shows Romantic and folk-like musical elements. The Frequent use of various modulations, the progression of a chromatic scale, the sequence, the borrowed chord, the altered chord, and diminished 7th chord describes the Romantic mood. Also, the use of the connection of harmony which is not related, the use of dissonant chords, the crossover of Major and minor, the use of mode scale, the use of dance rhythm give peculiarities to Grieg's music through introducing the characteristics of nationalistic music on the basis of Romanticism. Finally, as we can see, in the form of the musical tradition, Grieg's Piano Sonata Op.7 is considered as a composition which consists of Romantic and nationalistic elements. That is, while it follows German Traditional ways in form, it contains the elements of folk-like musical elements on the basis of Romantic music.
