Cantilevered sign support structures have been constructed to increase serviceability and safety for drivers. It notifies easy and accuracy information to drivers. The support structures are susceptible to fatigue cracking from numerous cycles of wind and other loads. Designer should also consider the fatigue failures under these loadings. Previous researchers showed that there were at least four-wind loading phenomena which can produce excessive displacement and stress ranges in these structures, i.e., galloping, vortex shedding, natural wind gusts, and truck-induced wind gusts. It also revealed that many cantilevered support structure connection details exhibit very low fatigue strengths. To improve the fatigue resistance of these structures, AASHTO adopted the fatigue provisions of the 2001 specifications. On the other hand, Korean specifications did not have the provisions. This study evaluated the provisions specified in Korean and AASHTO specifications and reviewed the current fatigue-limit state design of cantilevered sign support structures. The fatigue limit-state wind loads and the fatigue detail categorization were reviewed for fatigue-resistant design of cantilevered signal, sign, and luminaire support structures. Important factors were used to adjust the level of structural reliability for three categories of cantilevered support structures. Based on existing design of these structures, structural analysis was performed with respectt to wind-induced loads of each specification and were compared the results. The fatigue resistance of connection details in current AASHTO specifications was also reviewed and applied to Korean specifications. The following conclusions form this study were made ; 1) It was known to be at least four wind-loading phenomena which can produce excessive displacements and fatigue cracking. AASHTO recommended to use equivalent static load ranges for each of the four types of loading and for each general type of structures. These static load ranges should be used to design critical structures on high speed high volume roads. 2) Based on an analysis of existing cantilevered sign support structures, the combined stress ratio(CSR) based on Korean and AASHTO specifications revealed similar results for chord members but very different for posts. Therefore, Different amplification factors should be used for member stability check. 3) Based on the fatigue analysis of existing structures, the stress range at stiffener termination, post-stub connection, and strut-to-chord connection was greater than the corresponding constant amplitude fatigue limit(CAFL) and the detail is inadequately designed for fatigue. On the other hand, the stability of both chord and post members had shown to be sufficiently conservative. Accordingly, the present specifications may not be conservative and cantilevered support structures must be designed for fatigue limit state as well as member stability. 4) Due to the flexibility of cantilevered support structures, the number of problems with vibration and fatigue have occurred. Like AASHTO specifications, the fatigue limit-state wind loads and the fatigue detail categorization should be incorporated into the Korean specification.
