Preaching is the most important aspect of the ministry. The purpose of this study is to explore how to effectively preaching in multimedia epoch. To do this, I try to adopt a communication theory and also analyse a questionnaire on how to improve preaching. Traditionally, Preaching is usually considered as prophetic proclamation. So, it is usually operated through an oral performance. Then, audience is excluded from message of preacher. But in this time, preaching can be regarded as interactive event. It means that preaching is a communication which consider importantly the role of the audience and preacher. Therefore, this study approaches a preaching in terms of a communication. There is no unilateral preaching without the audiences. They are not only partners of preacher, but also complete the preaching with the preacher. So that, the traditional style of preaching cannot be helpful any longer, because the modern audiences seem to prefer visual text such as film and paintings to written text. So, in order to successfully deliver a sermon to audience, it is necessary for preacher to investigate how to adopt the technological of multimedia. However, the main purpose of this study is not just to borrow the technological efficacy of the multimedia. Because, I think that preaching is essentially interactional oral communication for face-to-face meeting. In this point, this thesis does not concerned with the question of 'what we preach' and `how we preparation' but how to effectively deliver the messages. In doing so, I try to overcome the crisis of preaching which Korean church is faced in these days. Especially, I wish to provide a new paradigm of preaching with the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea who mainly focus on a prophetic preaching. The term, multimedia is usually used to defer to the total system in which the disparate information such as sound, image and picture can be combined together. In recent years, it has been said that the modern society can be characterized in terms of media fusion such as visualization, integration, interactivity and asynchrocity. Therefore, the modern society does not rely on human reason and written text any more, but on spirituality and visual text. For this reasons, many scholars call our society as post-modern society. My dissertation is consisted of six chapters. In First chapter, I investigate the relationship between multimedia and communication theory. In Second chapter, by examining the theological consideration and communication theory, I try to explain how preaching as communication can be validity. In Third chapter, I also deal with the preaching of Mose and of Paul in Bible as a example for my thesis. In Fourth chapter, first of all, I explore the negative and positive functions of both preaching language and non-verbal medium. After that, I research on which kind of media is reasonable for the preaching in multimedia epoch. In Fifth chapter, I analyse the questionnaire in which I ask 345 ministry who belong to the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea. On the basis of the field research, I suggest a new paradigm for the renewal of preaching. Furthermore, I also provide the way and contents of preaching which is proper for post-modern society. In Final chapter, I propose a narrative preaching as a example for the renewal of preaching in multimedia epoch. And I will suggest some proposals for the renewal of preaching in Presbyterian church in the Republic of Korea.
