The purpose of this study is to investigate the social relationships and adjustments of the computer game - addicted adolescents, especially to help try psychological & social intervention and develop social - adjustment programs for the computer game - addicted adolescents. The subjects of this study were 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade male adolescents in high school. According to the Internet Addiction Test(which revised into computer game) score, they were classified into two groups by upper 25% and lower 25%; the computer game - addicted group(n=81) and the non - addicted group(n=79). The devices of measurement for this study were the Internet Addiction Test that modified by So - Young Lee(2000), Self - Image Questionnarie for Young Adolescents(SIQYA) related to Social relationships and adjustments, Korean - Teenagers Activity Inventory(K - TAI) by Hye - sook Shim & Myoung - Kwon Kim(1998) related to school adjustments and social alienation. Statistical methods applied were crosstabs, t - test, correlation and step-wise multiple regression. The statistical computations were done by SPSSWIN 10.0. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, the game - addicted group significantly spends more time than the non - addicted group in playing computer games. Moreover, the game - addicted group had a tendency to think that they should reduce time to play computer games. Also, the game - addicted group tends to play MUG(Multi - User Graphic Game) & MUD(Multi - User Dungeon Game) and they tend to play computer games alone. Both the game - addicted group and the non - addicted group tends to play computer games in order to get rid of their stress. Second, for the social relationships, the game - addicted group tends to perceive their family relationship and peer relationship more negative than the none addicted group. For the social adjustments, the game - addicted group perceived themselves as having low level impulse control ability and mastery & coping ability and they had low level school adjustment included attachment to school, adjustment to school and adjustment to study. Moreover, the game - addicted group had a higher level sense of alienation than the none - addicted group. Third, the anomia related to social situation, peer relationship and impulse control ability were significant variables that had influence on computer game addiction. Therefore, the more adolescents have high level sense of alienation, negative perception of peer relationship and low level impulse control ability, the more they are likely to be addicted with computer games. The findings of this study indicate that the computer game -addicted adolescents are dissatisfied with their social relationships and they have low level social adjustments. Therefore, I suggest that we should provide effective psychological & social intervention and develop social - adjustment programs to reduce sense of alienation for the computer game - addicted adolescents. It is necessary to develop other amusements except computer games for developing good social relationships.
