Since old days, our country has produced and used soybeans. Compared to other farm products, however, the income which can be earned by soybeans has been continuously lower. Moreover, foreign produced soybeans have been imported in enormous volume recently. As a result, the self-sufficiency rate of domestic produced soybeans conspicuously decreased to 6.4% in 2000. Given the situation, in order to increase the self-sufficiency rate of domestic produced soybeans to 50% by 2004, our government is enforcing a policy for the increased production of them. Nonetheless, their self-sufficiency rate has not been improved as much as it was intended to be. For example, it was merely 28.2% in 2002. Recently, the production quantity of rice, and the amount of MMA (minimum market access) have increased continuously. However, the consumption rate of rice per person remained merely 87.0 kg in 2002. In consequence, its total stock has gradually increased. As part of a policy for the reduced production of rice, some model cultivation of corps such as soybeans and fodder corps has been introduced the rice field. In order to cultivate soybeans successfully in the rice field, our government has made so many arduous efforts. Although its efforts cannot be said to have been unproblematic, its outcome seems to have been better than the field cultivation, in terms of production amount. In my research, I review the current trend of the supply and demand in soybeans, and examine problems with income from, and production costs of, soybeans. I also look into the governmental policies for the improvement of the self-sufficiency rate of edible soybeans, and the introduction of some cultivation technology of farm-field soybeans. In the empirical part of my research, I study an opportune time of seeding Paddy-field soybeans which are sown by the Soybean Seeder introduced as part of the agricultural mechanization in Yeoncheon-gun in the northern part of Gyeonggi province. By doing so, I can help farmers in the northern part of Gyeonggi province in two ways. I can lead them to seed soybeans by a tractor attachment type seeder (3 units) or a manpower seeder (1 unit), instead of a lot of manpower. The other help I can give them is to improve the self-sufficiency rate of soybeans.
