In this study, composite films based on chitosan and gelatin were prepared by solution casting method in the mixing ratio of chitosan, gelatin for the purpose of useful biopolymer films and mass-product. The effect of mixing ratio on chitosan/gelatin film properties such as tensile strength(TS), elongation(E) at break, total color difference(ΔE), opacity, water vapor permeability(WVP) and oxygen permeability(OP) was investigated. TS and E was determined using the ASTM Standard Method D 822-97. ΔE was calculated from Hunter L, a and b, opacity was measured with spectrophotometer. Also, WVP was determined gravimetrically using a modification of the ASTM Standard Method E 96-56, and OP was determined using the ASTM Standard Method D 3985-81. Results showed that TS, E, ΔE, opacity, WVP and OP values of chitosan/gelatin film were 57.81~26.54 MPa, 13.26~24.20%, 2.40~16.30, 0.3524~1.2016 nmO.D./㎛, 1.6271~1.7756 ng·m/㎡·s·Pa, 1.1351×10^(-7)~1.4660×10^(-7) mL·㎛/㎡·s·Pa, respectively. TS of the blend films decreased, while E, ΔE and opacity of the blend films increased with increasing chitosan content. WVP of the blend films did not show any significant relationship with mixing ratio and thickness of the blend films. OP of the blend films were lower than those of low density polyethylene and oriented polypropylene.
