The aim of this study is to develop a new assay kit capable of detecting antibiotics residues of a stock farm product (milk, serum, urine) by using biological strain (Bacillus Stearothermophilus 10149). The developing kit (named as SMART) in this study could be detect within a permitted limit regarding antibiotic residues, such as penicillin G (0.002 ∼ 0.004 ㎍/㎖) and oxytetracycline (0.1 ∼ 0.2 ㎍/㎖), in milk, serum, and urine. However, it is difficult to detect within a permitted limit (0.01 ∼ 0.1 ㎍/㎖) for seven sulfonamide. Moreover, I tested the extent of the detectable sensitivity to antibiotic residues between a SMART and a recently marked commercial assay kit, such as bacteria growth-retarded processing easy method (food-processing disc method, TTC-II), microbial-based detection method (Delvotest SP, Charm AIM-96), and immunological-based detection method (Parallux, Charm II). First, SMART showed a higher sensitivity to antibiotics than bacteria growth-retarded processing easy method and similar detectable effects on seven sulfonamide. Second, there is little difference for sensitivity to detect antibiotics in both SMART and microbial-based detection method, while their assay methods are not able to detect seven sulfonamide within a permitted limit. Third, SMART represented a similar and low sensitivity to antibiotics and seven sulfonamide, respectively, compared with immunological-based detection method. Summarizing, I report here that the detectible sensitivity for the presence of antibiotics in milk by using SMART is a higher than a commercial assay kit.
