This study examined how career barriers, career decision-making self-efficacy, and social support relate to career attitude maturity. This research specifically tested whether career decision-making self-efficacy mediated the relationship between career barriers and career attitude maturity. A competing hypothesis was that social support would moderate the relationship between career barriers and career attitude maturity. The sample of the present study consisted of 1024 college students (483 male, 541 female). The participants completed questionnaires of career barriers, career decision-making self-efficacy, social support and career attitude maturity. The results showed the followings. First, all subcomponents of career barriers contributed to career attitude maturity. Second, the findings of this study showed the mediating effects of career decision-making self-efficacy between career barriers and career attitude maturity. Although there were some mediating effects of career decision-making self-efficacy on all types of career barriers, the effect sizes were different. Third, the result of the present study did not support the hypothesis that social support would moderate the relationship between career barriers and career attitude maturity. Although some moderating effect was found in male students, the social support did not significantly influence career attitude maturity when the level of career barriers was higher. Fourth, there were significant differences between male and female students, which suggests that gender differences should be considered in career barriers research. Fifth, according to social cognitive theory and social cognitive career theory, alternative model were made since the results of this study were inconsistent with the original model structure. In alternative model, social support affected career decision-making self-efficacy but didn''t affect career attitude maturity. social support had smaller effect on career attitude maturity compared with career barriers. In conclusion, increasing career self-efficacy is significant in dealing with career barriers and lack of social support.Limitations of the present study and suggestions for future research were discussed.
