Many countries in the world are trying to solve eutrophication problems which cause water pollution in lake and reservoir. In Pusan Metropolitan City, water quality is in the worst condition due to water pollution of the Nakdong river. Although the city is doing its best to secure quality drinking water, its geographical position in the southernmost of the Korean peninsular, pollution in the upper stream of the Hoedong reservoir as an emergency drinking water source, and non-filtrated influx of pollutants accumulated within the reservoir made of an artificial dam are all raising the degree of water pollution. Thus it is necessary to carry out studies on the method of water quality management by ways of field research and analysis on the Suyong river flowing through the city's water source protection zone and the Hoedong reservoir whose water quality is now discussed to be leveled up to the first grade. It is also required to investigate environmental capacity both in the mouth of the Suyoung river whose rapid developments including formation of the Intelligence Complex and construction of the Kwangan Bridge are attracting more attention and in the coast of Kwanganri by examining conditions of pollution. In this study, the upper stream of the Suyoung river as located within the city's water source protection zone of the Pusan Metropolitan city, the region of the Hoedong reservoir, the mouth of the Suyoung river and the area around the Suyoung bay were selected as investigation area. Then the study investigated how pollutants are distributed in the water system of the river to provide basic data for actions for pollution prevention and evaluate the degree of pollution. Under a seasonal survey, Further, the analysis on pollutants in the lower and upper streams of the Suyoung river and establishment of actions for pollution prevention in the streams, effective ways of controlling leachate from mines within the water source protection zone, methods of analyzing and managing water quality of the Hoedong reservoir, and the pollution situation and ways of water quality management of the mouth of the river were discussed from the view of integrated water system management. Analyses on test materials sampled from both the water system of the Suyoung river and the Hoedong reservoir according to their seasons and depths showed that matters such as the leachate from mines, water quality improvement of the reservoir now at the third grade and accumulation of pollutants in the lower stream of the river are very significant. Regarding ways of water quality management of the water system, the following conclusions were found out. Concerning ways of controlling water discharged into the water source protection zone, it was found most realistic that sewage water generated near the upper part of the Onchun stream is transferred to the upper part and that small sources of such water whose collection is difficult because they are discretely located are self-treated and discharged into the upper stream of the Suyoung river. For the Hoedong reservoir, its concentration of BOD was evaluated as desirable in level at 3mg/L or below, but that of COD was corresponding to the third garde of water quality. Total nitrogen contained in the reservoir was at 1.86 to 5.84mg/L which far exceeding a given standard value, or 0.6mg/L, indicating that total nitrogen can be the main cause of eutrophication. According to the survey on the lower stream of the Suyoung river, the downstream site in the Onchun stream showed relatively higher concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorous than in the other posts. The two materials are directly flowed into the river, so actions against the matter are needed. The area around the Suyoung bay and the coast of Kwanganri both which are now evaluated at the 2rd grade were in fact identified having levels higher levels in many cases due to accelerated pollution. One of the alternatives for avoiding the drying of the Onchun stream is to use of the stream water of the Nakdong river which makes it possible to obtain the capacity of 85,000㎥/day necessary for maintaining the Onchun stream. Specifically, the supply of raw water of the river through piping lines from the Mulgum water intake plant would facilitate providing the amount of water for the maintenance and further contribute to raising the level of water quality of the Hoedong reservoir to the first grade.
