The goals of this thesis is to study the variable parameters in golf club shaft selection that depends on the characteristics of the user and the relationship between an appropriate choice of shaft and swing characteristics, i. e. swing speed, path, tempo, ball excursion and impact positions. The swing characteristics were determined by using a Golf Clubmaking software which was commercially available. The thesis presents three case studies with three different test subjects. Each subject was given to use the same driver material and design except the shaft with three different lengths, namely 42, 46 and 49 inches. From their swing characteristics the appropriate shaft length could be inferred. When each were given a custom made driver based on the swing characteristics report, their performance improved. A total of six drivers were made and used for this experiment. Finally, the four drivers, three driver with different lengths plus the custom made for each subject, were used by each subject to swing 20 times per club to average their swing performance. It is usually perceived that when the club head speed is fast then the travelled ball distance should also be longer. The study showed that there were other parameters that determined the ball distance and influenced its direction. These are: the material composition and elasticity of the club head, the precision of the impact position, swing path stability(back and down paths), the angle of the club head(open, close, square), among others. The customized club of each subject improved the impact precision and position and head angle. Overall each subject showed a stable swing and impact position with optimum distance. When choosing the right driver, swing precision and speed are inversely proportional. A compromise between the two will yield an optimum performance results. Understanding the user's characteristics, e. g. physical characteristics, experience, etc, can help in choosing the right shaft for an enjoyable golfing experience.
