Traditionally, essay education is considered crucial. A writing ability is a measure of the degree of academic achievement in every discipline. The essay test, which has lately been emerging as one of the major screening tools for college admission, is of new educational significance. So far, a fragmentary delivery of knowledge and its unconditional acceptance have been the dominant trend in our education. But the introduction of the essay test could be interpreted as moving toward process-oriented education that focuses on creative thinking faculty and inquiry into new knowledge. In particular, writing ability is mandatory for academic achievement and successful social life, as it is to logically unfold one's thought on a given problem to let others know what he or she want to say or persuade them. The purpose of this study was, accordingly, to discuss the nature of essay, extend it across every subject and spread discussion culture to improve student writing ability. A spoken language is part of process to produce a writing, and essay is what one's words are reconstructed into a written language. One can write an essay when an atmosphere of dialogue or discussion is built up. Encouraging discussion activities is a practical way to further the autonomous thinking faculty and problem- solving ability of students. Therefore, student should be instructed in an intentional and systematic manner to have discussion and develop writing skills. Second, a variety of styles applicable to discussion instruction were presented in this study, including brainstorming, which could enhance creative thinking power, or panel discussion, which is constituted by pros and cons and question and answers. For discussion activity, students should have a lot of chances to present their experience in diverse ways, since it's difficult to develop learning capabilities and ensure the retention of learning effect without ample experience to speak in front of others. Thus, discussion activities can empower students to establish a broad range of value criteria and pursue rationality in everyday life. A creative thinking faculty can be gained in the course of thinking autonomously and looking at things from a critical perspective, and once it's acquired, it will shine brilliantly in writing process. Third, as for practical essay education, an essay-inquiry project model was designed to fit small-group discussion activities. It's planned to stimulate discussion activities between student and student and between student and teacher, in the procedure of planning, envisioning, outlining, expressing, and rewriting, to help them actively share background knowledge and opinions. It's attempted in this study to present an essay teaching method through discussion activities in an effort to launch process-oriented education that focuses on inquiry into new knowledge, and this attempt was expected to be of service for more rational, desirable and practically applicable essay education. This study is just a starting point toward more diversified and concrete essay education, and its purpose would be attained if it serves as an opportunity to trigger active discussion about how to educate essay through discussion activities. And it's hoped that more comprehensive research efforts will be committed to essay education in the future.
