This study‘s aim is to explore traditional plays in Jeju by analyzing its local cultural heritage and the difference between Jeju and those nationwide The research questions are as fallows: 1) What are the traits of those who enjoyed traditional plays in Jeju, including age, sex and group size? 2) What are the time-related characteristics of traditional plays in Jeju, such as particular season and specific period of time in a year? 3) What are the spatial characteristics of traditional plays in Jeju including play environments and props? Through the literature review, 57 types of plays are selected, and quantitative analysis is made to calculate their percentage. In addition, content analysis is also implemented. The findings of this study are as follows: 1) Young children between ages 5 and 7 were less engaged in plays than those later in childhood, because local residents were preoccupied with overcoming tough living environments and weren't able to teach their children how to play. Children whose age ranges from 8 to 13 often imitated adult plays or took pleasure in working with adults. By sex, a lot of local plays were enjoyed by both boys and girls, whereas national traditional plays targeted boys rather than girls. For group size, small-group plays were more prevalent than large-group ones. Thus, play culture in Jeju is a mirror of the equality principle that was widespread in that region. 2) It's difficult to harvest crops in the area. Labor in the sea or mountainous region was looked upon as play. By season, winter plays made up the larger part of national traditional plays, since that was the farmers' leisure season, but in Jeju plays were enjoyed throughout the year without leaning toward any particular season, owing to the warm temperate climate. 3) There is no significant gap in spatial characteristics between local and national traditional plays. As children in Jeju were fond of the sea or mountain as playing spaces, those in the other provinces preferred outdoor spaces, such as fields, streams and mountains. And easily accessible natural things or their variations were utilized as props.
