This study was carried out to develop a system of measuring CO2 exchange rate of the whole plant and to compare the diurnal CO2 exchange patterns according to various cactus and succulent species showing CAM types in photosynthesis. The system consisted of air input part, sample selector, chamber, CO2 analyser and monitoring software. According to the results of the diurnal pattern of individual CO2 exchange of total 20 cactus species, they could be classified into full-CAM type(9 species), weak-CAM type(8 species), and non-CAM type(3 species). In addition, the data showed that relative humidity changes in the chamber during night period were closely related to stomatal opening of cactus, but not relative changes of temperature inside the chamber. Consequently, both CO2 uptake and transpiration were taken place at the same time through the opening of stomata during night period. In order to investigate the proper diurnal environment to maximize the rate of CO2 uptake through stomata in cactus during night period, Gymnocalycium baldianum and Carnegia gigantea, showing full-CAM mechanism were chosen to evaluate the CO2 exchange rate, photoperiod, and temperature conditions. In both species, the CO2 uptake rates were maximized during night period under the light condition above 300μmol·m-2·s-1 during day period. Also, if high light intenisty such as 600μmol·m-2·s-1 were inserted for 5 hrs when low light intensity such as 50μmol·m-2 was illuminated continuously during day period, nocturnal CO2 uptake rate increased about 10 times in G. baldianum and 2 times in C. gigantea compared with that of low light condition only. In terms of photoperiod condition, the maximum rate in nocturnal CO2 uptake was higher in 16/8hrs (Day/Night period) than 12/12hrs photoperiod, however the total CO2 uptake during night period was more efficient in the latter than the former condition. Moreover, the rate of nocturnal CO2 uptake was more increased under 30/20℃(Day/Night temperature) condition than 30/10℃. Conclusively, the data indicated that the appropriate environment to maximize the rate of CO2 uptake in full-CAM type cactus during night period was to maintain with high light intensity and long day, if possible, during day period, and not to allow temperature to be excessively low during night period. Photosynthetic characteristics of 9 succulents were evaluated by examining the diurnal exchange rates of CO2 and optimum condition of day and night environment was clarified to maximize the nocturnal uptake of CO2 by succulents. As a result, succulents were classified into two groups, i.e., Faucaria tigrina, Gasteria gracilis var. minima. Haworthia cymbiformis and Haworthia fasciata showed full-CAM type CO2 exchange rate and Adromischus clarifolius, Crassula hyb. 'Moonglow', Echeveria derembergii, Crassula cv. Himaturi and Haworthia retusa were weak-CAM type. Relative humidity of the chamber was fluctuated during experiment periods. CO2 exchange rate of Crassula cv. Himaturi was highly affected by light intensity as well as photoperiod when the environments of day and night were different: nocturnal uptake amounts of CO2 was high at 25/20℃(day/night) and 16/8h photoperiod and showed maximum uptake at 300μmol·m-2·s-1 of diurnal irradiance. Consequently, high irradiance, long day period and 20℃ of nocturnal temperature is highly recommended to maximize the CO2 uptake rate of succulents at night. In order to investigate the proper diurnal environment for maximizing CO2 uptake rate at stomata of cactus during night period, Notocactus magnificus Ritt. showing full-CAM mechanism was evaluated in terms of the CO2 exchange rate according to different photoperiod and temperature conditions. The CO2 uptake rates during night period were affected by daylength (16/8h and 8/16h) under above 300㎛ol·m-2·s-1 at day, however, these were not affected in temperature conditions. In other word, the CO2 uptake rates during night period increased under the extended photoperiod. In order to reduce the CO2 concentration of indoor air, the effect of individual- and co-placement of three species was evaluated by their CO2 uptake patterns in Spathiphyllum wallisii of C₃foliage plant, Notocactus magnificus Ritt. of full-CAM cactus, and Crassula cv. Himaturi of weak-CAM cactus. Both Notocactus magnificus Ritt. and Crassula cv. Himaturi absorbed CO2 highly during night period and early stage of the day, and released CO2 thereafter at daytime. In contrast, Spathiphyllum wallisii showed C3 photosynthetic pattern. When C3 and CAM plants were placed together, CO₂concentration in the chamber decreased during daytime by overwhelmingly higher uptake of CO2 by C3 than CAM plant, while it was reduced at night due to CO2 uptake by CAM plant. In conclusion, not every cacti and succulents were expressed the traditional CAM photosynthesis. However, the most effective eliminators of CO2 among tested 20 plants were 9 cacti containing full-CAM type of Gymnocalycium baldianum and 4 succulents which included Faucaria tigrina of full-CAM type and Crassula cv. Himaturi of weak-CAM type. These plants could be recommended to reduce the indoor CO2 concentration at night. Gymnocalycium baldianum, Carnegia gigantea, Notocactus magnificus Ritt. and Crassula cv. Himaturi showed different CO2 uptake patterns by each environment, therefore introduction of high light to the CAM plants close to the window at day could accelerate the CO2 uptake at night, while it was independent of temperature. Similarly, high irradiation with extended daytime will be effective to purify indoor air, and high concentration of CO2 at night could be reduced by co-cultivation with CAM plants
