Therefore, the objectives of this study were carried out to determine optimum soil covering depths for the normal growth of planted trees. The study sites were located in Asan National Industrial Complex in Pyeongtaek City, and Sihwa Industrial Complex in Siheung City, Gyeonggi-do.In Asan National Industrial Complex, four tree species (Pinus thunbergii, Chamaecyparis pisifera, Zelkova serrata, Quercus acutissima) were planted in various depths of soil covering (no soil covering, 0.5m, 1.5m, 2.0m soil covering treatments). One hundred eighty trees of each species were planted in April, 1998 and the tree growth patterns were measured for three years (September, 2000). In Sihwa Industrial Complex, four tree species (Pinus thunbergii, Albizzia julibrissin, Sorbus alnifolia, Koelreuteria paniculata) were planted in various depths of soil covering (no soil covering, 0.9m, 1.4m, 1.8m, 2.2m soil covering treatments). The tree growth patterns were measured from 198 trees of each species planted in April, 1999 for 4 years (September, 2003).Temporal change of soil and soil water properties, tree mortality rate, root collar diameter and height growth, nutrient and chlorophyll contents of leaves were measured from each treatment plot. The results were as follows:Soil pH, EC, ESP, exchangeable cations (K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+), anion (Cl-), and base saturation increased with decreased soil covering depths. These soil properties increased rapidly in the soil covering depth below 1.5m. The tree growth and mortality in the soil covering depth below 1.0m were affected by over 0.4mS/cm for EC and over 0.05% for salt which are the damage concentration of tree growth. There was a positive correlation between soil property (EC, Na+, Cl-, total base, base saturation, ESP) and tree mortality rates, while a negative correlation between the property and tree growth. The chemical properties of soil water were significantly changed in soil covering depths below 1.5m(p<0.05). The water pH, EC, cations (K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+), and anion (Cl-) increased rapidly in soil covering depths below 1.5m, being affected directly by high base contents in soil capillary water. The mortality rates of tree species planted in both Industrial Complexes showed decreasing trends with increased soil covering depths. Tree mortality rates increased rapidly in soil covering depths below 1.5m(p<0.05). In Asan Industrial Complex, the mortality rates of Pinus thunbergii were 27.8% in 0.5m and 8.3% in 1.0m soil covering depths and no dead trees in 1.5m and 2.0m soil covering depths. The tree mortality rates in various depths of soil covering (0.5m, 1.0m, 1.5m, 2.0m) were 100%, 66.7% 100%, 66.7%, 58.3%, 33.3% for Chamaecyparis pisifera, 75%, 50%, 8.3%, 2.8% for Zelkova serrata and 63.9%, 52.8%, 16.7%, 16.7% for Quercus acutissima respectively. In Sihwa Induatrial Complex, the tree mortality rates in various depths of soil covering (0.5m, 1.0m, 1.5m, 2.0m) were 11.1%, 2.2%, 8.9%, 4.4% for Pinus thunbergii, 44.4%, 44.4%, 2.2%, 0% for Albizzia julibrissin, 64.5%, 44.5%, 13.3%, 6.7% for Koelreuteria paniculata and 80%, 75.6%, 37.8%, 20% for Sorbus alnifolia, respectively. There was a negative correlation(p<0.01) between soil covering depths and tree mortality rates of all tree species (7 species) except for Pinus thunbergii in Sihwa Industrial Complex. The height growth of tree species planted in both Industrial Complexes showed increasing trends with increased soil covering depths. In Asan Industrial Complex, the height growth of Pinus thunbergii was significantly different between soil covering depth below 0.5m and other three covering depths, while the growth of other species (Chamaecyparis pisifera, Zelkova serrata, Quercus acutissima) was significantly different in soil covering depths below 1.5m. In Sihwa Industrial Complex, the height growth of Pinus thunbergii and Albizzia julibrissin was significantly different between soil covering depths below 2.2m and other three covering depths, while the growth of Koelreuteria paniculata was significantly different between soil covering depths below 0.9m and other three depths. The growth of Sorbus alnifolia was significantly different between soil covering depths below 2.2m or 1.4m and below 0.9m or 1.8m. In Asan Industrial Complex, height growth rates in all soil covering depths were 63.2% for Pinus thunbergii, 6.0% for Quercus acutissima and 4.3% for Zelkova serrata, respectively and growth rates in three deciduous broad leaved trees were less than 10% for 3 years. In Sihwa Industrial Complex, the growth rates were 56.4% for Pinus thunbergii and 14.3% for Sorbus alnifolia, respectively. The root collar diameter growth of all tree species planted in both Industrial Complexes showed increasing trends with increased soil covering depths. In Asan Industrial Complex, the growth rates of root collar diameter for Pinus thunbergii were 18.6%, 26.7%, 33.3%, 34.6% in various depths of soil covering (0.5m, 1.0m, 1.5m, 2.0m), respectively. There was a significant difference between a soil covering depth below 0.5m and other three depths(p<0.05). The growth rates for Chamaecyparis pisifera were 15.2%, 31.3%, 30.5% in various depths of soil covering (1.0m, 1.5m, 2.0m), respectively and no significant difference between soil covering depths below 1.5m and below 2.0m. The growth rates were 20.1%, 31.5%, 46.1%, 43.2% for Zelkova serrata and 10.1%, 14.5%, 22.4%, 22.3% for Quercus acutissima in various depths of soil covering (0.5m, 1.0m, 1.5m, 2.0m), respectively, and no significant difference between the soil covering depths below 1.5m and below 2.0m.In Sihwa Induatrial Complex, the growth rates of root collar diameter for Pinus thunbergiiwere 95.5%, 127%, 115%, 138% in various depths of soil covering (0.9m, 1.4m, 1.8m, 2.2m), respectively. The growth rates were highest among four planted tree species. There was a significant difference between a soil covering depth below 0.9m and other three depths(p<0.05). The growth rates for Albizzia julibrissin were 78.1%, 101%, 134%, 143% in various depths of soil covering (0.9m, 1.4m, 1.8m, 2.2m), respectively and no significant difference between soil covering depths below 1.8m and below 2.2m. The growth rates for Koelreuteria paniculata were 13.6%, 44.7%, 65.1%, 64.3% in various depths of soil covering (0.9m, 1.4m, 1.8m, 2.2m), respectively and were significantly different between the soil covering depth below 0.9m and other three depths. The growth rates for Sorbus alnifolia were 32.4%, 48.8%, 52.9%, 64.3% in various depths of soil covering (0.9m, 1.4m, 1.8m, 2.2m), respectively and were significantly different between soil covering depths below 0.9m and below 1.8 or 2.2m.In both industrial complexes, the chlorophyll contents of leaves increased with increased soil covering depths as the cases of tree mortality rates and tree growth patterns. In Asan Industrial Complex, the chlorophyll contents for Zelkova serrata and for Quercus acutissima were significantly different in the soil covering depth below 1.5m, but no significant difference between below 1.5m and 2.0m. In Sihwa Industrial Complex, four tree species (Pinus thunbergii, Albizzia julibrissin, Koelreuteria paniculata, Sorbus alnifolia) were significantly different in the soil covering depth below 1.8m(p<0.05). Nutrient concentration (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) of leaves increased generally with increased soil covering depths as tree mortality rates, tree growth patterns and chlorophyll contents. Nutrient concentrations for Pinus thunbergii were not significantly different in various depths of soil covering, but nitrogen concentrations for Albizzia julibrissin increased with increased soil covering depths and showed three times as high as other tree species. Nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations for Sorbus alnifolia increased with increased soil covering depth, while potassium and calcium concentrations showed decreased trends with increased soil covering depth. It is important to determine optimum soil covering depths for a good tree growth because soil covering depths for establishing tree planting bases in coastal reclaimed lands are related to the costs for soil collection, transportation and reclamation. There was a significant difference between the soil covering depth below 0.9m and other soil covering depths(p<0.05).The results suggest that the survival and growth of tree planted in coastal reclaimed lands were significantly affected by various depths of soil covering, which show a strong relationship with soil property changed by high base contents in soil capillary water. Tree mortality rates of all species planted in both Industrial Complexes decreased with increased soil covering depths, while height and root collar diameter growth showed increasing trends with increased soil covering depths
