The purpose of this study is to examine into the characteristic of expressional development by analyzing children's clay modeling. It is said that a child's artistic expression is a reflection of the child's intellectual and emotional level. Such a characteristic is notable at 3-8 years old children from an appraised point of view. That is to say, the object of this research is to grasp and inquire into the characteristic of cubic expression by steps, by assaying the peculiarity of children's clay modeling on person, animal, and vessel. Accordingly I enforced the teaching for clay modeling at educational field to achieve the aim of this study. The course of study covered one-two times in a week, and 3-6 years old children took a course in children's home and 7-8 years old children took a course in primary school. And I analyzed their works by ages(4-5persons), by dividing into the type of person, animal, and vessel. The main analytical standard of works is based on 『The theory of juvenile art, 1995』, 『The guidance and comprehension of juvenile art, 2000』 as Choon-il Kim's writings, and 『Art and visual perception, 2003」 written by Rudolf Arnheim. I examined their clay works through the analytical standard of whole image, details, spatial expression, motions, and proportion. The results of this study are as follows. In 3-4 years old children's clay modeling, their voluntary expression originated. In the early expression, they attached to the investigation of material. The main current of their works were limited to simple and stick types and there were many accidental expressions. They had no interest in a space sense, motions, and a proportion on the object. In 5-6 years old children's clay modeling, their symbolical expression originated and the period is a plane expression. The main current of their works were limited to simple types of a triangle, a square, and a circle. And the linear expression of a long stick type was revealed in the period. They had no interest in expression on motions and proportion by attaching to space and shape. In 7-8 years old children's clay modeling, their symbolical and cubic expression originated. Some children attempted a detailed and a technical expression to their works. And they were concerned about a space sense, motions, and proportion. The subject of this study was 3-8 years old children and I analyzed the works of 29persons for this research. Accordingly there is need to study and analyze the object by various age structure. It is necessary to develop an analytical instrument based on actual circumstances. And investigators must keep up this study on children's clay modeling by accumulating and analyzing data of a long term. As the elevation of children's expressional power means an enlargement of educational and remedial effect to them, there is necessity for improving the quality of educational environment. Educators have to grope for a good guidance on children's clay modeling in order to realize an educational ideal.
