The present study investigated the perceptual ability of the high-functioning autistic children to read facial expressions and to correspond emotions across sensory by comparing with normal children (control group). Thirty children, 15 of whom are high-functioning autistic children and 15 of whom are normal children. The two groups were matched on gender, chronological age, and intelligence level. The experimental tasks were composed of three different types of task: In the type 1 experimental task, the participants were asked to respond to 12 questions related to primary and secondary emotions expressed on faces. The type 2 experimental task was composed of 10 questions, in each of which the participants were required to listen emotionally laden voices of man or woman and to match them with emotionally corresponding facial expressions. In the type 3 experiment, the participants were required to listen 10 vocal stimuli(sounds) and to choose the most corresponding visual stimulus(picture) with each vocal stimulus(sound). The major findings obtained from the present research were as follows: 1. The results showed that high-functioning autistic children were less able to read emotion from facial expression than normal control group of children. However, high-functioning autistic children were less able only in reading secondary emotions. They showed equal ability in reading primary emotions from facial expressions. 2. The results showed that high-functioning autistic children were less able to match emotionally laden voices of man or woman and emotionally corresponding facial expressions than normal control group of children. And they were less able to match emotion from vocal stimulus with the most corresponding visual stimulus than normal control group of children.
