As scientific methods were incorporated into electric wire design & production in the 21^(st) century, not only have demand from electric machineries advanced, but also a new type of electric wires have been developed in line with development of various synthetic skin materials. In addition, demand for electric power energy has exponentially increased due to the industrialization and advancement of our society, and power cables today have gradually evolved into the energy supply media with the large capacity and very high pressure. The large capacity has led to structural and systematical technology development of power cables whereas new insulation materials and new production process technologies have been implemented to achieve the very high pressure of the cables, and the relevant research has been steadily conducted so far. Polyethylene is widely used as the insulation layer of the power cables since it provides superior electric insulation and an easy application of the compression processes, but deteriorates owing to various factors. Even the underground power cables insulated with cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) - which has superior heat-related and machinery characteristics to those of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) - eventually deteriorate as time goes by, which makes accidents arising from deterioration inevitable. The research related to deterioration of power cables is mainly divided into the deterioration diagnosis research and the material development research. In the past, assessment by electrical methods had been the major deterioration diagnosis research effort, but the polymer characteristics analysis method is used these days. This method has been used by foreign research centers such as EPIR since approximately 10 years ago. It measures the structural changes and predicts the degree of the characteristic changes because all the external factors cause the structural changes in the materials. As an example of applying the polymer characteristics analysis method to the electric insulation sector, the method is mostly used in the basic property evaluation for the electric problems or new product development. As mentioned earlier, power cable accidents caused by deterioration can occur, but accidents are frequently occurring in Korea with the power cables that are 8 ~ 12 years old, which is far less than the 30-year expected life of power cables. The number of such accidents is continuously increasing. Although it is natural for power cable accidents to arise from the weak defects, it is very difficult to identify the accurate cause since the defective part also gets destroyed when an accident occurs. Causes of the power cable accidents are categorized into the defective construction, production defect and natural deterioration. The power cable accidents arising from the defective construction include the damaged insulation layer and inflow of alien substances which may occur during the pulling operation, unreasonable construction beyond the allowable radius of curvature, and external injury on the on-site operating machineries. The power cable accidents can also stem from a defect during production processes. The representative defects include a projection of the semi-conductive layer, alien substances or void within the insulation layer, and non-bridging. Moreover, natural deterioration can also cause power cable accidents such as moisture flowing into the place where cables are operating, water tree effects resulting from the complication of cardiograph, imbalanced voltage arising from corroded neutral lines, and polymer oxidation effects. Therefore, we intensively studied technological methods to safely prevent aging degradation in advance through the thermometric analysis of heat degradation in cables, and to identically measure the generated heat and sensible heat by fairly maintaining the radiation ratio applied to cables for this research. In order to consolidate the uninterruptible inspection techniques and judgment standards for cables using infrared-ray thermo equipment, we analyzed the temperature distribution around the heating area by establishing theories about infrared rays and conducting the on-site tests. Abnormal heating mainly results from the defective contact, increased contact resistance by aging, joule's heat generated by insufficient connection to a machine, or overloading. We can more easily diagnose abnormality in equipment by using the infrared-ray thermo equipment and visually displaying the temperature distribution around the heating area. • We established the basic theories about infrared rays through theoretical investigation and radiation ratio adjustment methods. • We explained the thermo equipment using infrared rays and concepts about the measurement principles. • When we measured the power equipment, we implemented the measurement methods and diagnostic techniques to flexibly respond to the local testing circumstances. • Although it is relatively easy to perform the analysis of the in-between and nearby temperature at super-high pressure & high-pressure facilities and the temperature near the abnormal heating area, we need to investigate the pressed electric current beforehand, and must adjust the radiation ratio and sensitivity according to substances of the measurement target (0.83 ~ 0.93 for cables). (The radiation ratio is fixed at 1 except for special cases.) • For the outdoor measurement, we must consider environmental influences such as direct sunlight, reflective light from the sun, wind, rain, shadow and others. We believe our research results can be the standards for assessing heat temperature of all the power equipment. For the equilibrium and non-equilibrium loads, the application of the loading rate is important whereas the influence of the wind speed must be taken into account for the outdoor measurement. Since numeric values of the judgment standards are the results of measuring most of the electric equipment, the correct measurement and analysis of the temperature distribution around the heating area should produce results not going over our judgment standards too much. Going forward, we believe that more accurate standards will be established if more measurement data are collected by using the infrared thermo equipment, and that our research can be utilized as reference data for diagnoses using the infrared-ray thermo equipment and provide significant help when the infrared ray thermometry is measured.
