In general, predicted accident damages are not only far different from actual consequences because they are calculated with a release scenario for the worst case, but also variable according to adopted models and calculating methods. Therefore, there comes a need to predict and analyze accurately accident damages through a selection of objective and realistic release scenarios. In this study, we tried to propose a selection method of release scenarios and a analysis method of damage effects of a vapor cloud explosion at a gas release accident. Thus, release rates and damage areas (damage area of facility and fatality area) were estimated by the general method of consequence analysis (CA) and the API-581 BRD (based resource document) at various release conditions (temperature, pressure, release material, etc.), release sources (pipe and vessel), and released types (instantaneous release and continuous release). As a result, in the case of pipe or vessel releases, release rates and damage areas estimated by the CA method and the API-581 BRD were not quite affected by temperature. However, these were increased with increasing the size of the release hole, pressure, and the diameter of pipe. Also, they became very high-valued in the release scenario for the worst case; while damage areas estimated by the weighted average method were similar to the ones of all release scenarios, except a rupture. Moreover, consequences in the vessel release were higher than those in the pipe release, and consequences in the instantaneous release were higher than those in the continuous release. In these conditions, the order of damage areas in the vessel release was as follows; tank > reactor > drum > column. From aforementioned results, we concluded that the rupture was the worst case of release scenarios at a vapor cloud explosion by a flammable gas release, and that release rates and damage areas were better estimated by the API-581 BRD (the weighted average method considering a generic failure frequency of the release hole) than by an arbitrary selection of the release hole.
