Flash memory is becoming important as nonvolatile storages for embedded devices because of its superiority in fast access speeds, low power consumption, small size and light weight. Though flash memory has many advantages, its special hardware characteristics impose new design challenges on storage systems. Most legacy HDD-based file systems do not consider the characteristics of flash memory and existing flash file systems such as JFFS do not consider the characteristics of multimedia files. This thesis studies the new multimedia file system (MMFS) for flash memory based storages. In MMFS, the meta data areas are separated from the file data area and can be moved. This provides better wear leveling and faster mount time than existing log structured file systems. Moreover, MMFS provides efficient space usage by storing the meta data in compressed form. Performance studies show that MMFS improves the mount time and performs better than JFFS2.
