Unlike industrial manipulators, the manipulators mounted on service robots are interacting with humans in various aspects. Therefore, safety has been one of the most important design issues. Many compliant robot arms have been introduced for safety. It is known that passive compliance method has faster response and higher reliability than active ones. Because the active compliance methods use information from sensors, the performances and safety are limited by the responses of the servo systems, the non-linear characteristics of the sensors and dynamics of the manipulator. In this paper, a new safety mechanism based on passive compliance is proposed. A 4-bar linkage, a spring, a wire and shock absorbing modules are incorporated into this safety mechanism. When the external force applied to the robot arm exceeds the prescribed threshold, the safety mechanism is deformed so that its compliance sharply increases, and thus the shock is absorbed. This deformed mechanism returns to its original shape when the load is removed. However, when the force is below the threshold, the safety mechanism does not deform, thus maintaining its stiffness. This principle of operation is based on the characteristic of the transmission angle of the 4-bar linkage. Validity of this mechanism is verified by simulations and experiments. It is shown that the manipulator using this mechanism provides higher performance and safety than those using other passive compliance mechanisms or active methods.
